I am very happy that this large, worldwide movement is occurring in order to end the current oppressive practices of those in power. I am particularly concerned with the rights of children, single mothers, victims of the mortgage scam, animals and mental health clients. Currently, I am acting as a peer-counselor and animals’ rights representative at Occupation LA.

We need to recognize–as it seems hasn’t been clearly done by OWS yet?–that those living in psychiatric systems and who have been labelled with psychiatric problems are some of the most oppressed people in the Western world, victims of stigma, forced/coerced diease-causing medication, shock therapy, and forced, indefinite confinement, to name a few. Furthermore, that the Occupation movement supports an end to human rights abuses against psychiatric clients iin jails, hospitals and other institutions and the creation of a new mental care systerm which recognizes that our culture and problems of living (which often include economic problems) are in large part responsible for what we currently term “mental disorders”. We must recognize that Big Pharmacy, the current traditional mental health systerm, and the medical-pharmaceutical complex have vested interest in seeking to block any acknowledgement by us or our society that this may be true and that they have for decades exerted their power through funding faulty research, and lobbying, and other means in order to stop true science from discovering–and human rights activists from disseminating—the truth about these conditions. They have used clandestine forces–including corrupt government–to block the truth and the demedicalization of these personality problems. Also, they have igniored and suppressed evidence that compassion, the meeting of nutritional and other bodily needs, help solving problems of living, including stressful altered state of consciousness experience, and therapy which developes commnication and coping skills, are what are needed in the vast majority of these cases.

Have you been discussing this all-important issue of mental health clients’ rights and the corruption and oppression of our psychiatric system? Please include discussion of this very important issue when you are deciding upon statements concerning, and demands about, the medical establishment, if you haven’t already.
