Principles of Solidarity

Translations: Spanish

On September 17, 2011, people from all across the United States of America and the world came to protest the blatant injustices of our times perpetuated by the economic and political elites.  On the 17th we as individuals rose up against political disenfranchisement and social and economic injustice.  We spoke out, resisted, and successfully occupied Wall Street.  Today, we proudly remain in Liberty Square constituting ourselves as autonomous political beings engaged in non-violent civil disobedience and building solidarity based on mutual respect, acceptance, and love.  It is from these reclaimed grounds that we say to all Americans and to the world, Enough!  How many crises does it take?  We are the 99% and we have moved to reclaim our mortgaged future. Through a direct democratic process, we have come together as individuals and crafted these principles of solidarity, which are points of unity that include but are not limited to:

  • Engaging in direct and transparent participatory democracy;
  • Exercising personal and collective responsibility;
  • Recognizing individuals’ inherent privilege and the influence it has on all interactions;
  • Empowering one another against all forms of oppression;
  • Redefining how labor is valued;
  • The sanctity of individual privacy;
  • The belief that education is human right; and
  •  Making technologies, knowledge, and culture open to all to freely access, create, modify, and distribute. (amendment passed by consensus 2/9/2012)

We are daring to imagine a new socio-political and economic alternative that offers greater possibility of equality.  We are consolidating the other proposed principles of solidarity, after which demands will follow.

1 The Working Group on Principles of Consolidation continues to work through the other proposed principles to be incorporated as soon as possible into this living document.
This is an official document crafted by the Working Group on Principles of Consolidation. The New York City General Assembly came to consensus on September 23rd to accept this working draft and post it online for public consumption

    Dear Committee;

I would ask that even though you are committee, you are careful to not leave the assembly in a place, which is just as uncomfortable as being evicted from your home.

You have only taken a small step where a much larger one awaits.

The funds will begin to dry up with inaction.

As for the weather, it will drive some of the protestors to go home to a more comfortable existence.

Your most important action at this time is to approach WORLD religious leaders (who have promised their followers peace) and talk about a new rewards/incentive program for society; one that treats everyone equitably.

Progressive thinking requires getting past the idea that anything existing can be modified to suit humanity’s needs. Before people discovered the limitations of the planet, people felt ‘ownership’ was the way to security – help protect what I’ve discovered; and I’ll hep protect yours. That is where all existing policy has come from. Just as the Magna Carta, and Declaration ushered in new thinking; society by way of the advancment in communications has developed new perceptions of the things around them. AND this species is not going off this planet anytime soon en mass.

The existing business and government are going to need to be eased into something more equitable. They will say their education and what they have done entitles them to more, but in truth, if all or most the manual laborers in society and people in the service industries where to up and stop working, what would get accomplished? That will get their attention.

Everybody, even with a lack of education, has actually built society. The existing wealthy and powerful will say it is through their efforts it has been done, and it has but only in part – but they are getting all the benefits of the labors. THIS IS THE FOCUS. They can’t do without you.

An example of one flaw in society: The ‘alleged intellectual educational’ system, condones this kind of thinking for the only intellectual reasoning species on the face of the earth: When a person gets sick or injured, add a penalty on them, by charging for getting them back to health – thereby adding a burden already on a burden. And lets not forget the businesses like insurance and pharmacuticals who are profiting off sickness and injury.

Besides the above mentioned example, the alleged intellectual educational community, condones an economic system that doesn’t treat everybody fairly, one that fails, fails, and fails time again, impacting the less wealthy more than those who are protected by it.

How many more examples do you need to see, to realize you need the help of people who God put there to help you change these things?

This must be a global effort, or go home now; because you are wasting people time trying to just get the opinion of the people.

You know what you know, but that is not good enough; and you are only holding back the thing which NEEDS TO HAPPEN, by not getting other people involved.

Get all the other occupy or protest organizations together with a collective plan, NOW.

Don’t underestimate my authority, or I will bring alot worse against you, and to prove my understanding.

    Start with this understanding:

Since light waves are reflecting off a surface right now as you read this – as the only thing happening with photons entering the eyes and the conversion of them resulting in sending electrons across the synapses of the mind; what within you is telling you this is a communication you need to pay attention to? Photons and electrons have no special ability to convey wisdom or emotion. That is generated from within you. With the sequence of my words I am telling you something to pay attention to. Words are everything, and the only distance between the two of us is in the words we use. There is no time or space as far as I am concerned; because they are only words. If you make a decision to do as I say, have you not traveled to a different place in your thinking, even if you did not move a muscle? That is where I live; solely in words; and I know the hearts of men in the words of men; and your’s do not please me. And that is for you to change.

This is what it means to be in the spirit. I can affect change in other men, without even communicating with them, becuase we are only separated by the words we happen to be using; and that is all that separates you from bringing down the oppressors. average person has 3000 thoughts a day; and it has only been the thoughts of people which have built what you see. Something greater is within. It is called ‘intent’ and purpose. I have no ‘intent’ to seek recognition for anything which I do; and you must do what you must do for what is to place.

You started it; now you must finish it; and you will get help if you seek it in the right places. We work together; or you are my enemy.

A sign will be forthcoming shortly after this message is read to the committee, even in part. You are not to make my presence known.

I really can’t say this enough. The entire world has joined us in a battle to fight greed and corruption in governance. This idea that by changing a law or legislation in the U.S. and hoping that money gets shuffled around better for only our citizens is disgusting (as disgusting as the greed that got us into this mess). It feeds back to a idea that says us first and you second, like some kind of global trickle down economics. Which disregards the hundreds of thousands of other human beings who put themselves in harms way around the world to show solidarity against this flawed system. People all over the world believe our freedom provides a unique opportunity to create global change (as has always been the case since the inception of our government) towards a system of true freedom for all people. It’s one of the epithets of the Declaration of Independence that we are ALL equal human beings regardless of where we happen to live. This is our chance to create real change, produce a new global society of free people who will protect and improve our planet, way of living and quality of life. Don’t waste time or effort in petty political pursuits, they will eventually lead back to the place we are now. We’ve made laws in the past because we could not find real solutions and it required prohibiting behavior. With our knowledge, technology and new all encompassing democratic processes there is a real potential for creating a new system of access for all people needs to be met, this should be our goal. Believe in and fight for true change and don’t settle for anything less.

      • NaiveTea

I’m with Franklin! This is the time for considering alternatives.

        • Orlando

I would just drop the God stuff, help all eat, have shelter, be taken care of medically and prevent oppression and exploitation. Thus we will find peace. I do not, nor would not expect society or any form of government to promote “God”, in my opinion God and spirituality are subjects best left to individuals.

          • Nate

Agreed, the concepts of god and spirituality are debatable at the individual level and within the individual, thus should have no place in government, not even the faintest hint at promotion or denial.

          • Caution

Orlando wants to drop “The God stuff”. I cannot help it but to be reminded how “Socialism” or the next stage of “Communism” was spread in the last century. The two main things the “working people” demonstrated were 1) Equality 2) Dialectical materialism philosophy – which means humans don’t need help from God we can do it ourselves mentality. Those two points led to create poor people in the society and rich governments with uncontrollable corruption. Just go back and read history.

I agree our society have gone to the other side of the pendulum of “forgetting the working class” and “enriching the rich” and must be corrected. However, we must not forget our constitution and values that made us one of the best in the world. Let’s keep the balance. As long as you give me freedom and peace, I will take care of my poverty myself.

          • Kevin Schmidt

The reason “The God stuff” was dropped in the last century, was because for at least the last 2,000, “The God stuff” “led to create poor people in the society and rich governments with uncontrollable corruption. just go back and read history.”

You should take your own advice and “not forget our constitution”. There is no “God stuff” anywhere to be found within it.

By the way, just who are you asking to give you “freedom and peace”?

“Don’t underestimate my authority, or I will bring alot worse against you” and “A sign will be forthcoming shortly after this message is read to the committee, even in part. You are not to make my presence known”

So, you’re God? Or God’s spokesperson?

Seriously, Ariel, you need to take a breath. Or – seriously, not to be sarcastic – your meds. This kind of self-aggrandizing fantasy (or worse) just makes the movement look ridiculous.

        Franklin great comments
Ariel you have good proposals but your insistence on the omni-potentate is a bit over the top to put it lightly. The written story of people of this planet is rife with the “do good or I will punish you idea”. It leads to more harm than societal benefit, if you allow us to flourish without the threat of punishment we will see your ideas as viable. Your comments as one rightly put will cause others to view the movement as “loopy” to put it lightly.
Thank you for your comments Orlando and ken I second your statements. Have a great and open exchange is worthwhile for development. Ariel’s opening statements on the education, economy and wealth/resource distribution is right on. The comments concerning the use of labor by the “elite/wealthy/power brokers” spot on. There is much meat in these comments as long as we don’t focus on the deliverer of the message the “message” might get through. The format of this forum is great for this type of message delivery as we can gleen from the message what is useful/beneficial at the moment and leave those comments not deemed useful right now……..

      Dear Committee,

Will your group eventually make the following demands to Washington ? If not, why ?

Congress men & the senators should take a cut in pay, have the same health insurance available as the general public, and forfeit their pensions (as most of us have had them taken away).

CEOs have a specified cap put on their salaries and bonus until at least this crisis
      is over.

      Thank you – Jill

Ariel. Wow. This sort of thinking truley reflects the diversity of the 99%. Where I live the thing is the thing.

  2. groobiecat

Great document; brilliant, simple, covers almost everything. Well done statement of applying democratic and egalitarian ideals. I would only add something about how #OWS is not about a physical space, per se, but a new way of empowering people (and engaging them) as part of the 99% ethos.

Obviously visibility is key, but how to tap into resources that can’t be there in “meatspace”? The potential well of support will be bottomless if the movement is not only associated with a physical place, per se, but also a comprehensive, complementary digital social action/collective as well (Occupy the Cloud?). This huge virtual core of people and resources is available and can provide support from our more “mainstream lives” to offer financial assistance, basic physical need support, and can be integrated into the model the GA process). So, ultimately, the “boots on the ground” can be supported and work with the many more “butts in the office chairs.”

Keep up the heroic struggle. If you aren’t legion now, but soon you will be.

(I still think that “Sell shit you don’t need and give the proceeds to #OWS!” would be a great initiative to raise funds. But I’ll bring that up in the proper group! Cheers,)

  3. dovidmoishe

Principles of Solidarity is a great start, a statement by which I am proud to be represented. It is a simple, yet radical, declaration and invitation to engage in the process of mutual respect and empowerment that redefines and changes our social contract and ourselves and can save the world from its present path toward self-destruction.

I think we also need to consider healthcare as an inalienable human right. No one should go bankrupt because they get sick.

    • Vane

“No one should go bankrupt because they get sick.” isn’t the same as “the health of our community depends on the health of its members.” Universal access to health care, coaching and education are essential to the physical, spiritual and economic vitality of our community.

    • Sherry

To accomplish this, a change in the US Constitution is required, to make health care a fundamental right, which is doable. While I think doctors are entitled to earn an excellent income, due to the schooling and funds required to become a doctor, there needs to be a change in the health care system where administrators are not earning several hundred thousand dollars per year. I heard Michael Moore say something about this on TV this evening, he said we need to take away the huge profits being made in health care, of which I agree.

      • Dawn Thomson

Sherry: Your comment brings to light how all of this begins to tie together and why I so agree with not making any demands about anything until things are all on the table and properly tied together. High costs of health care are directly linked to the amount charged by doctors to which you say they deserve because of their costs in schooling and funds required to become a doctor, but with the costs of higher education also being addressed and allowing the possibility of those not as fortunate as those currently afforded the opportunity to became doctors, this also adds to the possibility of lowering costs, along with the administrations huge earnings. I do not have a proper figure in my head but having no health insurance myself and being only able to take emergency care, because of the fact the a doctors fee is somewhere in the neighborhood of $800.+/- an hour and minimum wage is less than $8. an hour it is really quick to see why we can not afford not only preventive healthcare but can’t afford to go unless we are dying…it is sickening and all the reasons I am so passionate about this movement. And I am not even saying they do not deserve this, but how can we ever recoup from odds like this, I personally am drowning in medical debt and it has also been responsible for many of the other problems I face, the rob Peter to pay Paul syndrome, can never reach a balance.

      • Lee Einer

I worked in the area of healtcare finance for close to 20 years. I turned whistleblower and was eventually featured in Michael Moore’s documentary, Sicko.

I offer that just to clarify the fact that I have seen the ugliness of the US for-profit medical care system up close and personal, and for longer than anyone should have to.

We may not need a constitutional amendment. We do need and end to the for-profit healthcare model, and universal coverage. These two go hand in hand because we cannot afford the continued profiteering if we are to provide universal coverage. There are several viable models, all of them good. The British model has the advantage of eliminating profiteering by the medical provider as well as the medical payor. An expansion of Medicare or Medicaid to provide universal coverage has the advantage of ease of implementation, but would require extensive policing of the provider community to insure against fraud, abuse and profiteering.

Whichever option is chosen is less important than the need for one of them to be chosen, and chosen soon. Every year, an estimated 45,000 Americans die from treatable diseases and conditions due to lack of access to medical care. Since Sept. 11, 2001, that means that nearly a half-million Americans have died unnecessarily. This country has gone to war over less.

In addition, half of all foreclosures in this country are attributable to medical expenses.

We need to change the system, now.

      • April Reese

Sherry: welcome to communism. This entire movement is elitist manipulation. DONT YOU PEOPLE GET IT!? THEY WANT US TO GO CRAZY!!! THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SPURRED THIS THINKING! we are all being manipulated by the very people we wish to demonize. The constitution is the only thing we have. you take that away and we are all naked and starving dogs wandering the streets, shivering in the cold. we are making this so easy for them. and to whomever said that God is not in the Constitution, I advise you to go back and read it. God is the forefront to everything in that beautiful sacred document. and He is the only reason we exist.
        You should all be ashamed.

From the beginning when our country was formed we face many challenges and many opposing views

Just like today however, the peoples voices have been silence by special interest groups as well as the over whelming power grab by the bankers. Your demands/petitions will never be heard or taken seriously unless lobbyist/corporate have bless it for greedy reasons or Co-Opt it.

It is time for a fair hearing!

Wouldn’t it be great if you can be heard, fairly and equally? Wouldn’t it be worth your time to know there is a petition list, worth signing rather then getting involved in so many other worthy causes? Can be a drain, especially knowing many of lists of issues will mostly not be look at or simply be voted downed.

It can also be time consuming.

This is were the 7’step plan an ever growing list known as the “TOCSFAE” doctrine helps just about every cause, the cause that helps almost all other causes should be supported. These step plans, solves many of the roots of all our problems we face.

Whether you have protested at the gas pump or you are an Occupier and Tea Partier, for that matter any protest mover, make your protest have meaning, give it the teeth it needs beyond the gas pump and over the protest lines.

This petition will be a notification to congress of things yet to come and to properly prepare.

As of January 2012 we the people

We will not take the abuse anymore and neither should they walk around with there heads in the sand.

We will begin the process of phase one

Your petition will go to congress, informing them you support The “TOCS FAE” Doctrine and so should they, by making preparations for receiving and forwarding income Tax mail. Your petition will also go to the top corporations letting them know of our intentions and they too should support and act on the doctrine by sending their taxes directly to congress. They should also be informed if our demands are not met, protests will be under way the likes they have never seen.

After this is achieved and we have broken the back of a few select Corporations we will move on to Step1 Taxes which may take months or years

Step1) Send your TAXES to a trusted congressman or congresswoman which maybe hard to find in your state. Make a Petition with your neighbors. Phone, email, fax your congress your list and intentions. Prepare your taxes, made out to the I.R.S check and envelope, and a stamp. Fit it in inside of a bigger envelope, onto which you should write congress address, preferably your state congress.

Washington, DC 203 Cannon House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Phone Number: (202) 225-2831

Have congress unwrap the envelopes, state you want your taxes to be mailed to the I.R.S

If you are asking yourself, what will this achieve first it can be used as a bargain chip however, congress cannot spend it or over take the fed reserve and banks system over night, nonetheless this will indeed give teeth/meat, back to congress. You should include a sign return receipt so as to show proof you paid your taxes.

    For the rest Click

If you are interested in expressing this message to the Occupy General Assembly you should present the ”TocsFae” Doctrine in David Ferola’s name, and claim you are him, for solidarity purpose.

Over the past 50 years, since the start of the sixties, there has been a cultural and spiritual awakening occurring that is now beginning to approach a critical mass, which is needed before any profound economic and political redesign of our global system could occur. This happens when a change of consciousness—a profound paradigm shift—occurs that leads to comprehensive cultural change that prepares to institute Earth Community which is: “a life-centered, egalitarian, sustainable way of ordering society based on democratic principles of partnership” through the equitable distribution of economic power—a democratic economy—that is an essential foundation of political democracy. This simple phrase: “Abolish Empire and Establish Earth Community” should be clearly understood and ingrained in each and every one us as our absolute endgame. And no other document epitomizes the values of Earth Community than the Earth Charter. “Often referred to as a people’s Declaration of Interdependence, The Earth Charter elaborates four overarching principles of Earth Community: 1) respect and care for the community of life; 2) ecological integrity; 3) social and economic justice; and 4) democracy, nonviolence, and peace,” this according to Korten. “It is also a declaration of universal responsibility to and for one another and the living Earth.” 5
On Sunday, May 8, 2011, during the “May 1st” week of International Workers Day, The Neo-Transcendentalists for The Society of the Third Millennium (S3K) signifying both the name of the art collective and the cohesive vision, presented the unveiling of an outdoor, site-specific, guerrilla art project called “THE MONOLITHIC MILESTONES, 2010-2011: A Declaration Of Interdependence Through The Integral Vision, Grand Unified Strategy & Philosophical Pillars Of Neo-Transcendentalism At The Georgia Guidestones.” It was unfurled as the peoples’ response to any purported agenda put forth by the Neo-Fascists Corporatism of the global power elites. These “Transformative Tenets of Integral Activism” that was written in white paint on the black fabrics of each individual side of the granite pillars of America’s most mysterious monument in northeast rural Georgia, represents a succinct synthesis of some of the most important Cultural Creatives’ ideas to date. From the works of Ken Wilber’s “Theory of Everything” encompassed by his “Integral Operating System (IOS)/AQAL model” (represented on the granite covered center cap as “I,” “WE,” “IT,” “ITS,”) to going as far back to the 1830’s with the start of the American Renaissance by the original Transcendentalists. The following is just one of the philosophical pillars of Neo-Transcendentalism that serves as our common and unifying grand imperative of what we are fighting for as expressed by the Earth Charter.

We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its fu-ture. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a mag-nificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.

    Earth, Our Home

Humanity is part of a vast evolving universe. Earth, our home, is alive with a unique community of life. The forces of nature make existence a demanding and uncertain adventure, but Earth has provided the conditions essential to life’s evolution. The resilience of the community of life and the well-being of humanity depend upon preserving a healthy biosphere with all its ecological systems, a rich variety of plants and animals, fertile soils, pure waters, and clean air. The global environment with its finite resources is a common concern of all peoples. The protection of Earth’s vitality, diversity, and beauty is a sacred trust.

    The Global Situation

The dominant patterns of production and consumption are causing environmental devastation, the depletion of resources, and a massive extinction of species. Communities are being undermined. The benefits of development are not shared equitably and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Injustice, poverty, ignorance, and violent conflict are widespread and the cause of great suffering. An unprecedented rise in human population has overburdened ecological and social systems. The foundations of global security are threatened. These trends are perilous—but not inevitable.

    The Challenges Ahead

The choice is ours: form a global partnership to care for Earth and one another or risk the de-struction of ourselves and the diversity of life. Fundamental changes are needed in our values, institutions, and ways of living. We must realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more. We have the knowledge and technology to provide for all and to reduce our impacts on the environment. The emergence of a global civil society is creating new opportunities to build a democratic and humane world. Our environmental, economic, political, social, and spiritual challenges are interconnected, and together we can forge inclusive solutions.

    Universal Responsibility

To realize these aspirations, we must decide to live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying ourselves with the whole Earth community as well as our local communities. We are at once citizens of different nations and of one world in which the local and global are linked. Everyone shares responsibility for the present and future well-being of the human family and the larger living world. The spirit of human solidarity and kinship with all life is strengthened when we live with reverence for the mystery of being, gratitude for the gift of life, and humility regarding the human place in nature.

We urgently need a shared vision of basic values to provide an ethical foundation for the emerging world community. Therefore, together in hope we affirm the following interdependent principles for a sustainable way of life as a common standard by which the conduct of all individuals, organizations, businesses, governments, and transnational institutions is to be guided and assessed.

    1. Respect Earth and life in all its diversity.
    a. Recognize that all beings are interdependent and every form of life has value regard-less of its worth to human beings.
    b. Affirm faith in the inherent dignity of all human beings and in the intellectual, artistic, ethical, and spiritual potential of humanity.

    2. Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion, and love.
    a. Accept that with the right to own, manage, and use natural resources comes the duty to prevent environmental harm and to protect the rights of people.
    b. Affirm that with increased freedom, knowledge, and power comes increased responsibility to promote the common good.

    3. Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable, and
    a. Ensure that communities at all levels guarantee human rights and fundamental freedoms and provide everyone an opportunity to realize his or her full potential.
    b. Promote social and economic justice, enabling all to achieve a secure and meaningful livelihood that is ecologically responsible.

    4. Secure Earth’s bounty and beauty for present and future generations.
    a. Recognize that the freedom of action of each generation is qualified by the needs of future generations.
    b. Transmit to future generations’ values, traditions, and institutions that support the long-term flourishing of Earth’s human and ecological communities. In order to fulfill these four broad commitments, it is necessary to:

    5. Protect and restore the integrity of Earth’s ecological systems, with special concern for biological diversity and the natural processes that sustain life.
    a. Adopt at all levels sustainable development plans and regulations that make envi-ronmental conservation and rehabilitation integral to all development initiatives.
    b. Establish and safeguard viable nature and biosphere reserves, including wild lands and marine areas, to protect Earth’s life support systems, maintain biodiversity, and preserve our natural heritage.
    c. Promote the recovery of endangered species and ecosystems.
    d. Control and eradicate non-native or genetically modified organisms harmful to native species and the environment, and prevent introduction of such harmful organisms.
    e. Manage the use of renewable resources such as water, soil, forest products, and ma-rine life in ways that do not exceed rates of regeneration and that protect the health of ecosystems.
    f. Manage the extraction and use of non-renewable resources such as minerals and fossil fuels in ways that minimize depletion and cause no serious environmental damage.

    6. Prevent harm as the best method of environmental protection and, when knowledge is limited, apply a precautionary approach.
    a. Take action to avoid the possibility of serious or irreversible environmental harm even when scientific knowledge is incomplete or inconclusive.
    b. Place the burden of proof on those who argue that a proposed activity will not cause significant harm, and make the responsible parties liable for environmental harm.
    c. Ensure that decision making addresses the cumulative, long-term, indirect, long dis-tance, and global consequences of human activities.
    d. Prevent pollution of any part of the environment and allow no build-up of radioac-tive, toxic, or other hazardous substances.
    e. Avoid military activities damaging to the environment.

    7. Adopt patterns of production, consumption, & reproduction that safeguards Earth’s regenerative capacities, human rights, and community well-being.
    a. Reduce, reuse, and recycle the materials used in production and consumption systems, and ensure that residual waste can be assimilated by ecological systems.
    b. Act with restraint and efficiency when using energy, and rely increasingly on renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
    c. Promote the development, adoption, and equitable transfer of environmentally sound technologies.
    d. Internalize the full environmental and social costs of goods and services in the selling price, and enable consumers to identify products that meet the highest social and environmental standards.
    e. Ensure universal access to health care that fosters reproductive health and responsible reproduction.
    f. Adopt lifestyles that emphasize the quality of life and material sufficiency in a finite world.

    8. Advance the study of ecological sustainability and promote the open exchange and wide application of the knowledge acquired.
    a. Support international scientific and technical cooperation on sustainability, with special attention to the needs of developing nations.
    b. Recognize and preserve the traditional knowledge and spiritual wisdom in all cul- tures that contribute to environmental protection and human well-being.
    c. Ensure that information of vital importance to human health and environmental pro- tection, including genetic information, remains available in the public domain.

    9. Eradicate poverty as an ethical, social, and environmental imperative.
    a. Guarantee the right to potable water, clean air, food security, uncontaminated soil,
shelter, and safe sanitation, allocating the national and international resources re-quired.
    b. Empower every human being with the education and resources to secure a sustainable
livelihood, and provide social security and safety nets for those who are unable to support themselves.
    c. Recognize the ignored, protect the vulnerable, serve those who suffer, and enable them to develop their capacities and to pursue their aspirations.

    10. Ensure that economic activities and institutions at all levels promote human development in an equitable and sustainable manner.
    a. Promote the equitable distribution of wealth within nations and among nations.
    b. Enhance the intellectual, financial, technical, and social resources of developing na- tions, and relieve them of onerous international debt.
    c. Ensure that all trade supports sustainable resource use, environmental protection, and progressive labor standards.
    d. Require multinational corporations and international financial organizations to act transparently in the public good, and hold them accountable for the consequences of their activities.

    11. Affirm gender equality & equity as prerequisites to sustainable development and ensure universal access to education, health care, & economic opportunity.
    a. Secure the human rights of women and girls and end all violence against them.
    b. Promote the active participation of women in all aspects of economic, political, civil, social, and cultural life as full and equal partners, decision makers, leaders, and bene-
    c. Strengthen families and ensure the safety and loving nurture of all family members.

    12. Uphold the right of all, without discrimination, to a natural and social environment supportive of human dignity, bodily health, and spiritual well-being, with special attention to the rights of indigenous peoples and minorities.
    a. Eliminate discrimination in all its forms, such as that based on race, color, sex, sexual
orientation, religion, language, and national, ethnic or social origin.
    b. Affirm the right of indigenous peoples to their spirituality, knowledge, lands and re-
sources and to their related practice of sustainable livelihoods.
    c. Honor and support the young people of our communities, enabling them to fulfill
their essential role in creating sustainable societies.
    d. Protect and restore outstanding places of cultural and spiritual significance.

    13. Strengthen democratic institutions at all levels, and provide transparency and accountability in governance, inclusive participation in decision making, and access to justice.
    a. Uphold the right of everyone to receive clear and timely information on environmen-tal matters and all development plans and activities which are likely to affect them or in which they have an interest.
    b. Support local, regional and global civil society, and promote the meaningful partici-pation of all interested individuals and organizations in decision making.
    c. Protect the rights to freedom of opinion, expression, peaceful assembly, association, and dissent.
    d. Institute effective and efficient access to administrative and independent judicial procedures, including remedies and redress for environmental harm and the threat of such harm.
    e. Eliminate corruption in all public and private institutions.
    f. Strengthen local communities, enabling them to care for their environments, and as-sign environmental responsibilities to the levels of government where they can be carried out most effectively.

    14. Integrate into formal education and life-long learning the knowledge, values, and skills needed for a sustainable way of life.
    a. Provide all, especially children and youth, with educational opportunities that em-
power them to contribute actively to sustainable development.
    b. Promote the contribution of the arts and humanities as well as the sciences in sus-tainability education.
    c. Enhance the role of the mass media in raising awareness of ecological and social challenges.
    d. Recognize the importance of moral and spiritual education for sustainable living.

    15. Treat all living beings with respect and consideration.
    a. Prevent cruelty to animals kept in human societies and protect them from suffering.
    b. Protect wild animals from methods of hunting, trapping, and fishing that cause ex- treme, prolonged, or avoidable suffering.
    c. Avoid or eliminate to the full extent possible the taking or destruction of non-target- ed species.

    16. Promote a culture of tolerance, nonviolence, and peace.
    a. Encourage and support mutual understanding, solidarity, and cooperation among all
    peoples and within all nations.
    b. Implement comprehensive strategies to prevent violent conflict and use collaborative
problem solving to manage and resolve environmental conflicts and other disputes.
    c. Demilitarize national security systems to the level of a non-provocative defense pos-

As never before in history, common destiny beckons us to seek a new beginning. Such renewal is the promise of these Earth Charter principles. To fulfill this promise, we must commit ourselves to adopt and promote the values and objectives of the Charter.
This requires a change of mind and heart. It requires a new sense of global interdependence and universal responsibility. We must imaginatively develop and apply the vision of a sustainable way of life locally, nationally, regionally, and globally. Our cultural diversity is a precious heritage and different cultures will find their own distinctive ways to realize the vision. We must deepen and expand the global dialogue that generated the Earth Charter, for we have much to learn from the ongoing collaborative search for truth and wisdom.

Life often involves tensions between important values. This can mean difficult choices. How-ever, we must find ways to harmonize diversity with unity, the exercise of freedom with the common good, short-term objectives with long-term goals. Every individual, family, organization, and community has a vital role to play. The arts, sciences, religions, educational institutions, media, businesses, nongovernmental organizations, and governments are all called to offer creative leadership. The partnership of government, civil society, and business is essential for effective governance.

In order to build a sustainable global community, the nations of the world must renew their commitment to the United Nations, fulfill their obligations under existing international agreements, and support the implementation of Earth Charter principles with an international legally binding instrument on environment and development.

Let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life.7

    1. The Overall Theoretical Picture Being Generated No Longer Corresponds To External Reality, So It Becomes The Moral Responsibility Of The Mentally Liberated Who Possess An Accurate Assessment Of Current Conditions To Help Others Break Out Of The Trance Of False Consciousness. We Must Expose The False Map Of Reality That Is Used As A Means Of Social Control To Maintain The Status Quo Through Such Mass Deception By Presenting An Opposing & New Map Of Social Reality.

    2. However, There Is An Absence Of New Modes Of Thinking & It’s The Duty Of The Psychologically Freed To Facilitate The Capacities To Engage In “Cognitive Activism” To Reimagine New Possibilities Of An Alternative, Sustainable & Integrated Vision Of A Positive Future. Only After Articulating Such Aspirations In A Cohesive Vision & Coherent Strategy Will We Begin To Successfully Cultivate A Critical Mass.

    3. Such Intellectual Explorations Should Guide Us To Envision Real Utopias & Develop A Common Ethical Code of Conduct That Is Consistent With The Various Needs Of Human Nature.

    4. Human Nature Is Not Greedy, Selfish, Aggressive & In-dividualistic. Instead The Tendency Is To Fit Into A Social Whole, Regardless Of Social-Economic Class, Race, Religion, Ethnicity, Gender Or Sexual Orientation. Our Prehuman Ancestors Were Strongly Bonded, Sharing & Communal—The Building Blocks Of “EARTH COM-MUNITY.” Therefore, The Worldview That Coincides Most With Human Nature Is The “Nurturant Parent Model.” 42

    5. In Contrast, The Parental Paradigm That Is Mostly At Odds With Our Human Nature Is The “Strict Father Fig-ure” Worldview That Perceives The World As Evil And In Need To Be Protected From At All Cost & By What-ever Violent, Dominating & Destructive Means Available Like Torture, Oppression & War. This Has Led To Pos-sessive Individualism, Extreme Competition, Excessive Materialism & The Ascendency Of Private Property, Capital & Interest, Efficiency Of Production, Exploitation & Imperialism—The Corrupt Cornerstones Of “EMPIRE.” 43

    6. “While The Past Cannot Be Undone, There Is No Moral Justification For Continuing This Exploitation Into The Future. It Can Be Halted Only By Understanding Its Past & Present Realities.” 44

    7. “In Order To Bring About a More Just World, One That Is Less Exploitative Of Both Natural & Human Re-sources, Major Political Changes Will Be Necessary Not Only In The Capitalist Countries, But In Communist & Third World Countries. If A Worldview Is Defined As Our Beliefs & Assumptions About How To Behave In The World, Then Politics Is Either The Means For En-forcing Those Beliefs & Assumptions, Or The Means For Changing Them.” 45 Government, Therefore, Should Not Be Perceived As “A Necessary Evil,” But As The Physical Manifestation Of Our Highest Ideals.

    8. However, Our Current Political System Is Broken. We Are Governed By A Plutocracy—An Economic Oligarchy Of Rich Ruling Families & The Power Elites Who Are Social Climbers That Serve Them.

    9. The Mounting Populous Anger Will Soon Reach A Tip-ping Point. And If We Do Not Have A Cohesive Vision & Coherent Strategy For Fundamental Trans-formation In Place By Then, We Will Only Repeat The Shortcomings of the Sixties & Seventies. Such Frustration Drove The New Left To The Brink Of Insanity By Succumbing To Terrorist Tactics Like Bombing Buildings As Some Members Of The Students For A Democratic Society (SDS) Did As The Weather Underground. In addition, Violence Must Be Avoided At All Cost For The Ends Do Not Justify The Means Because The Means Are The Ends In The Making. Even Saul Alinsky’s Version Does Not Hold Up. And Whatever Perceived Short-Term Gains Or Alleviation Such Acts May Provide, We Must Adhere To A New Paradigm: Ethics Is Not Doing What Is Best For The Most But Instead Doing What Is Best For The Long Run.

    10. Ultimately, Our Power Lies Not With Working Within The System, Nor By Working Outside Of It But Instead
By Unplugging The System Itself Through Social,
Political and Economic Non-Cooperation In The Form Of A Nationwide, General Strike That Will Require All Of Us To Develop Individual And Collective Character Traits Of Courage, Sacrifice And Perseverance.

Solidarity sounds a lot like “if you throw yourself off a cliff, then all your worries will be over.” If that is not what is sounds like, then that’s what it should be to self serving nincompoops of the Occupy movement. When you throw yourself to your death, please do take a shower first, you will smell better dead and have a greater chance of ‘getting a job’. Yes, many of you will have a better chance getting a job clean and dead than smelling like your own shit and being alive.

How profound are your words, plagerized marxism…utopia for all …fair for all…. and you fail to paint this utopia you run towards. Who will lead your world of fairness and equity..who will judge the citizens of free? Why do you not speak of all the communist groups who support and fund your existance? The Alliance for Social Justice who granted your tax exempt status connected to Van Jones and his Rebuild the Dream Group connected to funded by the convicted felon Billionaire George Soros? Why do you not speak of the horror of communism as you play death’s songs to those who are fooled. All about freedom, all about free. They cannot see the prison you bind them to, the enslavement of your occupy everything. You seem not to notice how contrived your oneness is as you are brainwashed with twinkle fingers and repetition of speakers. You seem not to see the de-humanizing of your supposed 1%…the usual technique to allow for murderous acts. You have been inculcated instead of educated.
Those silken words of yours calling forth revolutions past, praising those who murder others. A grave we now stand upon, the grave of those innocents. You deem yourselves the “rightious ones”, yet you are the judges, the jurors and executioners. The untold millions dead from Communism and what remains, the enslaved. This is your utopia. A nightmare for humanity!

Frauds and fools implementing the evil destruction.

  9. Ken G.

Well, this is all very fine sounding and idealistic, but I have to say it’s far too utopian, far too broad, and, well, far, far too idealistic to bring about much in the way of any result. Perhaps as an internal document indicating a sense of our broader goals, it may have some value. But try to present this to the world as our goals, and you’re going to lose the majority before they’ve gotten to the third or fourth line. This is far too metaphysical, abstract and ascetic to gain any traction in a blue-collar, paycheck to paycheck society.

  10. Nathan

I agree that these are broad principles, but I think that’s the right place to start, and these are right-on!! Obviously OWS needs to start getting more specific about where things are headed, but things are going in the right direction so far!

  12. BradB

The living document; “Principles of Solidarity” looks Fantastic imo…

    a couple quick ideas,

on “direct democratic process” … I agree 100%, that that is the the goal …
a stepping stone to maybe help get there… a “Peoples Veto” ….

    on “The belief that education is human right;
    how about; “The belief that education and health is human right”;

on “Redefining how labor is valued;” … well … that’s kind of like a retreat… no?
it’s appears defensive…. imo… what we are trying to get to … is simply a better prosperity for all… no?

    how about; “The belief that the freedom to value labor should not be abused” ;

    just brain-storming on this..
We have an opportunity to expand wealth beyond mere economic realm,
    Is Art not a wealth?
    Is Knowledge not wealth?
    Is Health not wealth?.. etc.

Why do we need to evaluate these Wealth’s to economic realm ?
Seriously, Economic Wealth is merely economic… the buying, selling. trading of stuff….

Can we not create additional higher valued currency’s ?…
Can we not create an “Art Currency” ? … should be way more valuable than just buying & selling crap…

anyway… The living document; “Principles of Solidarity” is Fantastic… Love It 😉

I have read parts of this document / amendments, I notice some postings appear to be a type of collective doctrine. I do not think that someone else s “doctrine” should not be incorporated. Parts of that doctrine of course… Is there anything that states this ???

  19. Rev. Earlean

I have not had a chance to read the proposal, so I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I want to help (where possible) when the police are arresting occupiers. The occupations must remember that the city officials are getting together and using word games to classify the protesters, just so they can make arrest. The occupations must remember that in Oakland and most likely, in the other cities, the 1st Amendment Protesters are being labeled “Campers”, just so they can be arrested and evicted! A camper is not sleeping in order to protest, he sleeps to sleep. The protester sleeps to “protest” injustices and to exercise their Constitutional, rights! The city assembly members must be reminded of this. If a man camps in a tree to protest and save the trees, then he is not a camper!
The City of Portland, CA, said the protesters were offered services for the being homelessness and for mental help, but they did not except” Well, the PROTESTERS are not homeless, nor are they mentally ill!
Therefore, Occupiers, must be allowed to exercise their rights to occupy the parts they have paid to build!

@Arial makes some great points. Here’s my suggestion and a piece of background info from where I stand.

    1. Like every war, you must take out your enemies communication. Meaning you will never even get close to communicating our message to 150million people which is just about half of the US population.

WHY? Oppression and manipulative messages are presented 24/7 in what is suppose to be “news.” Do you know how many people are addicted to television and build themselves out of ideas presented to them.

HOW? Bringing down and breaking up the most well-known media conglomerates
    a. News Corporation which owns Fox News, 20th Century Fox Film Corporation
    b. NBCUniversal Media LLC owned by General Electric and Comcast
    c. CBS Corporation

    2. Win #1 and then you go from there, once the true message/ The Declaration of Occupation have been read to the rest of 99% as if it was the president speaking with no interruptions.

You know at first I was like lets bring back the Glass-Steagal Act, lets break up the banks, but as i look deeper into this movement I feel like no we deserve more, my people deserve more, Earth deserves more.

You can not have a revolution in the United States or so much as the entire world without undoing all the wrongs from this government. Do you know how many people the U.S. government and America’s colonization pissed off?

The problem with a demand being open to debate asking the 99% to join in and step up to a corrupted system:
It’s open on a global scale especially since NY is where you can find immigrants from all over the world.

Think about Africans brought here in slave ships, stolen from their land, and the Indigenous whom native land was stripped and natural resources are constantly being abused and destroyed.

Growing up in the “ghetto” in NY and seeing inequality and having to go to the worst educational system in the world is a sickening feeling at heart. Then traveling to where your mother grew up in the Caribbeans and realizing you don’t have it the worst, it just torments your soul. After reading history from only couple of generations ago clearly seeing the root of the problem, GREED, is really depressing. Sure I crack a smile every once in a while when I remember to live love and laugh to the rhythm of your own heart beat, and keep on fighting.

    -Tainos alive and still fighting

love and peace to you all!

An Open Letter to Family and Friends (rerevised 4-22-11) oldenglsh
by Tony Parkhurst on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 1:20pm

At fifty years of life I am writing this letter in attempt to clarify the understanding and

position voiced of at least several members of what I have considered family and friends

so that I can make an informed decision as to whether to continue to consider them as

such dependent of the choices they alone are free to make or not.

There are those that I have no need for such consideration. My family and friends, understand that unconditional love is not just an unattainable concept or empty words but a part of whoever, they are, and have the capacity

of, and lends itself to, empathy.

Thirty years ago member of my immediate family were made aware of the reality of my sexual

Forty years ago in reaching the discovery of that part of my life and the continued realization of that

part of who I am in the discovery of my humaness.

A little more than Fifty years ago I entered this world.

The continued chosen and accepted silence, literally and/or figuratively, by some family members is

and has been deafening on this matter. Whether, by lack of concern and/or interest.

This letter should not be interpreted as an attempt to seek your approval, it is not. Nor

is it an attempt to place judgment on any person, while it does discuss behaviors, both

taught and/or self induced. It is merely a means to clarify my understanding.

For I have learned – it is far more important to understand than be understood, but while focusing on

that both may occur, it is not intentional.

For in a mature human relationship based in reality, spiritual principles, common decency, and just basic

understanding of our humaness it is, quite frankly, extremely agitating that such letter has to be written.

Yet, it is because of my understanding of unconditional love that I have for family and friends

and my refusal to accept the outright hateful, hurtful, insensitivity, and seeming lack of any attempt

at, or simple refusal of, certain persons to practice even basic empathy towards, or adjust

such unacceptable behavior, even when confronted. Or, to recognition and/or have sensitivity to

and/or of, such behaviors, in ourselves and others.

For an alleged family member or friend to say whether by action or deed, and/or to state

“yes, I love you, or am your friend”,

yet, place conditions on such love is a concept I refuse to accept, when placed on any part of, who a person is. In my idea of family and/or friends, it is unacceptable behavior and should no longer have to be tolerated by anyone.

To clarify a distinction should be made between behavior (learned or taught) as a

condition, of which can be altered and a part of who a person is, ( born as), sexual

orientation, eye color, hair color, physical characteristics and the like. The focus here is

Who among you has the capacity to look a child, any child, your child, son or

daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, cousin, and or friend, face to face in

the eyes and say any of the following –

“yes, I love you, but” –

if your sexual orientation is homosexual or lesbian not only can I no longer love you unconditionally,

    that it’s a choice and/or bad genes,

that you just haven’t met the right man or women, that if you did they can turn you straight,

that you will go or burn in hell, or just go burn in hell,

    to leave,

that we don’t love you enough to even try, it’s just not worth the effort,

that it hurts to think about such matters concerning your happiness,

that as long as you stay in the closet, all is well,

that you have a mental sickness,

that as long as we can’t see or hear you,

that we as parents are at fault for producing such a freak of nature and are ashamed and sentence ourselves to eternal damnation,

that we are the real victims, as such, to warn others of any potential exposure to the satans’ spawn,

that our hearts have grown so black, or controlling, or selfish, or godlike, that only we can know or can determine/choose not only who but how you are allowed to love or to express that love or with who,

that I/we being heterosexual have a stronger link to God, or whatever intelligence, collective awareness, guidance (whatever, whoever, or however you may define) because of that heterosexualness,

that the God I/we understand will not allow it. that because we all were taught God’s love is not unconditional, but conditioned on our sexual orientation, looks, amount of money. social status, etc… we may or may not have, and other heterosexually orientated behavior(s)…..

that our so called perfect God makes mistakes , that homosexuality is not natural ?

(Even though it does occur in nature, and/or could be simple, explainable, as in nature, perhaps as

nature’s way of holding down the population naturally versus overpopulation. in furtherance of

the sustainability of the limited earth’s resources. The seeming inability for certain heterosexuals to take such, sustainability or reasoning, into account, as supported by the amount of seemingly disposable parentless children.

More often, seen as, by certain heterosexuals, as a natural instinct and right to multiply versus having the love it may take to raise a homeless child, that certain heterosexuals would prefer such children, regardless of the sexual orientation, to live their childhood void of what they allegedly have to offer only to their pure offspring, without even reaching any of the bigger question(s), ………

Is it perhaps God’s plan or a reminder or way of showing us of our, at times, own selfishness?

What if, what, God is/was really trying to say .is/was –

that the old adage -Its always been that way and/or will always be, or a book allegedly inspire by God, but written and edited by man, man got the part (there will be poor always) and perhaps maybe, more than likely, other parts wrong?

Or, that since it has been edited by at least one king, could not perhaps societal limitations, values,

and/or standards not have been snuck in, intentionally or not? Or, in any of the religions, organized or not?

Was not the Christ the only perfect man? Therefore, could any man or women, have been, is, or ever will be perfect in their writing and or interpretation? ( Not to mention at least one religion, among other organized religions, that there is no telling what materials are and have been kept locked away for fear of the discovery of their own misteaching(s) and wrongdoing(s) . That, seemingly, appears in places and times to be, severally and severely, at odds with spiritual principles and teaches us hatred, and not what the spiritual principles of a loving God, should , would be, and more likely is.)

that being homosexually orientated you’re defective so gather the courage and kill yourself so that our lives could be more comfortable,

that our happiness/ friendship/ and /or love is dependent/based primarily on your sexual orientation,

that you couldn’t and/or it won”t be possible to have the ability in , a friendship or in love, to form healthy loving relationships, because of your sexual orientation, with anyone, even your kind, let alone, with us heterosexuals, even if the only real difference of a person”s sexual orientation, is in, the physical way, in which, one expresses consensual intimacy,

that the saying – opposites attract applies only and limited to, the sex of an individual and/or orientation, not to any other characteristic or personality trait(s),

that while God has infinite wisdom he is limited in his ability to love, and in the competition to gain God’s, family, or friends approval and love, because you are a homosexual or lesbian you don’t have a chance so if you are determined to be a homo or lesbi prepare for eternal damnation,

that we believe in our own piety and surety of God’s will for others that we will support and vote for any legislation to rid this nation under God from the scourge of homosexuals and lesbians like you, because we are so perfect in our judgment of others that not even one innocent person has been sentenced to die, our laws are so pure and just,

that we will make every effort to ban you from marriage because only heterosexuals understand and perfectly uphold the sanctity of marriage, and since the book is dead and is not a living and expanding documentation of spiritual principles, every word must be God’s and none from man’s/women’s own human limitations,

    that you are garbage,

that to save your soul or for whatever other nonsensical reasoning that we can rationalize, will and would deny your partner, lover, husband, or wife entrance to, decision in, any medical, hospital, and/or life or death situation regardless of your wishes, desires, we would rather you die of a broken heart than to rise from our utter ignorance, inhumaness, and/or lack of compassion,

that in our supreme all knowing perfect heterosexual love, we will love you, literally and figuratively, and/or patronize you , whatever, it takes to death ,

need more, is this picture of such hatred, ignorance, lack of common basic decency, getting clearer…

that being a homosexual or lesbian you could not possibly be a good/ fit/ loving parent to a child as you could have no real capacity to understand or show real love,

that we’ll pray for a cure,

that maybe if you’d just take your medication.

that we may catch the disease of homosexuality or lesbianism,

that you were taught or learned it,

    that it is a choice,

and, as such, in our judgment of you being a homosexual or lesbian (sexual orientated)- serve and have – no purpose or right or claim to life …

    or to live……….

    that in God’s plan and/or ours…..

that as long as you live a life void of human affection,

even the act of a simple embrace, the holding of a hand, a kiss

    unless it is heterosexually orientated

    I / we – won’t/can’t love you

or allow you to be loved or love and/or live?

    Who among you?

The little bit of discomfort some family and friends may have felt recently due to actions

and words spoken, or as a result of reading this, had and has a purpose, had and has a

meaning. It is your choice to either take that discomfort and if you perhaps gain even a drop of

empathy and perhaps mix it with just a sliver of an insight into what certain humans and I (new

stat out today at least 9 million in this country alone, that’s a lot of mistakes, by the way, that some

people’s God has allegedly made), have, are, will continue to deal with, hear, and feel

until the basics of human decency and/or common sense prevail,

Is it perhaps a choice, to remain in the increasing minority, or not? The world, however, slowly is

changing. However, slightly towards the better and will hopefully continue. As I have the

increasing confidence and faith, as more and more humans are choosing to wake up

from the seeming induced lull of the bliss of ignorance to meet the many challenges

facing us as a whole. While, seemingly, overwhelming, have solutions.

(one of my favorite quotes- “There are many great opportunities disguised brilliantly as

    impossible situations”- unknown)

Is it not one thing to tolerate this self chosen behavior of hatred from the world, should

a family member or friend have to hear or endure it from them, too?

Is love limited/conditional to sexual orientation?

My heart has grown strong, loving, and empathetical and will continue, despite the experiences of verbal abuse and bullying, to thoughts of suicide in the early years, to now where I hold one of many truths high among others of

    – it doesn’t matter what others think of me it’s what I think of myself,

However, at this time, I no longer choose or wish to subject myself or accept such behavior from supposed family and/or friends, or to a definition of alleged unconditional love, or however you define family and/or friend that would include such hatred and behavior towards another, as described above and/or that –

Due to the self-imposed limitations of, or negative dynamics, that certain family and friends, choose to or will continue to choose to display, for what ever reason(s) – out of fear of change (most often the resistance to, not fear of), a seeming competition for anothers’ love, self-induced ignorance, selfishness, petty jealousy, elitist attitudes, refusal to realize, insensitivity, etc…..

(it just shouldn’t matter in the (why, who, if, when, how much, or where) of the person/ human being, that I may have a relationship with, to include but not limited to sexual orientation.)

to any person or persons ,that have or has, the capacity to continue to behave with such, as stated above, seeming hatred, disgust, and/or non-acceptance, of who I am in totality ( for I know my sexual orientation is but a part of who I am) and for the protection of my heart and the perspective of the possibilities, such seeming condition is placed. Not on the unconditional love, but the behavior.

It will not be that I do not or will not love you, but for now though, I would choose to limit my exposure of my heart to such behavior(s).

As, if not for family or friends who else should not the expectation and freedom to feel secure in and to ability to express and live to the fullness of my humanness, who I am.

I feel as strongly offended by certain family members incessant berating or negativity towards and/or of their children, other family members, and/or friends. Either to their face or behind their backs, however infrequent or rare.

Or to use or turn a blind ear to a family member or friend who continue to use the terms, fag, queer, girl, sister, or any other such derogatory terminology/teasing and/or used as a form of discouragement to an unwanted behavior(s) –

(I am first and foremost a human being. To delineate, the sum total of “who” of who I am, I am also described as a man or male, who, in a further descriptive manner, has a sexual orientation that is described, labeled, or defined as being homosexual, these being not all inclusive),

(To indiscriminately or with a motive to agitate, tear down, call into question a person’s sexual orientation, describe an unrelated behavior, and/or further debase another person, without forethought, is to me, an unacceptable behavior. Like the word “ni**er” used by certain afro-Americans, the aforementioned, are equally offensive and derogatory, and/or a generalization, rooted in prejudice, ignorance, and hate. perhaps, self-hate or disrespect)

(One could argue that between adults it would be more readily acceptable. Or, child to child. But , that much more egregious or offensive, and extremely indefensible, coming from an adult to a child. One could also argue that, if believed, we all have an inner child, as such, unacceptable in any form, with perhaps, the exception of, making a point combined with the ability to fully explain their reasoning, the context, and/or meaning for such usage Or, for the limited value of one’s attempt, to make a larger, more encompassing point.( The brief reference’s/descriptive’s validity far outweighs the potential of a brief discomfort and its’ use to describe an unacceptable behavior(s) or long standing pattern of behavior(s).purposeful, yet limited)

For through other(s) and my eyes, who choose, to see or focus more on the positive, they are and have been inspirational, in that they have persevered and have and are becoming mature loving young adults despite the negativity they have also experienced. They are the future, our future, our dream of a better tomorrow. Should they not be encourage to not be afraid, but to look towards the future with a sense of optimism, reality of where we are today, the challenges tomorrow, and be given the tools, that we all, will and do need or have, on theirs’ and our journey? To build up the human spirit not tear it down,

Or do we withhold our love or sense of family, as a form of punishment, or use our own children as manipulative tools, and/or shields, as an added little dagger/insult , failing to realize that, what complaints a few may have of my presentation , should the focus not be placed more on what is being said, not how?.

Or is a difference, being, that I have placed thought, effort, and can explain the rational of thought and action, versus the rantings of a person, with a seeming misplaced sense of authority, control, and or influence over the lives and thoughts of others, family members and/or friends?

While, some may, through social status or circle believe they have such, in a family, does such control, influence, or authority, truly exist? Or, have others just patronized them in order to maintain a sense of peace and/or failed to realize their own choice to subject themselves to such limitations of another?

Or, is it that some have abdicated their own happiness for false sense of another’s seeming

happiness whether it is based in reality, or not?

Or is it based on the teachings of real world experience or on a soap opera, romance novel, or other such non-reality versus facing and confronting real world issues, fact, science, positivity, emotional and mental maturity, and the like? Just what exactly do you, or is it, or could it be based on or in? Besides, because I said so, or perhaps some other equal false reasoning ?

Do we not all eat, sleep, breath, crap, and put on pants in the same basic way? In other words, do not all being humans have the same basic needs?

Is it a democracy or more of – It doesn’t matter who’s right but doing what is right?

(Little known or understood fact: The U.S. Constitution was written not for the protection of the majority, but for the protection of the minority from the majority.)

Was not the question – “Just because everyone else in jumping off the bridge, does that mean that you are going to jump off the bridge?” Ever heard that or learned how to apply it to the many fitting times and crossroads in everyone’s life?

Are families not by some definition a safe zone to argue, debate, discuss, to better prepare, and if you will, gain the insight, tools, support, and to form perspective, from each other towards some positive outcome?

Is it through each individual’s experience or a choice, that some family member’s first reaction is plan for the worst, expect the worst, and/or that every family member is out for blood?

Is it through, my eyes alone, that sees even the newest of family members regardless of age is a new and exciting source of fresh starts, inputs, and inspiration? I choose and believe, to think not.

Is it because when it comes to points of contention or confrontation, the learned behavior is to escape reality, rather than welcome it as an opportunity to gain from?

Or is it just because of one of the oldest strategies still prevalent and widely used of – divide and conquer – that we tend to look for the difference instead of the similarities?

Is it not that a some point in our lives we stop playing the victim or child, that we stop feeling only for ourselves, but at times place the feeling(s) of others above our own?

Will it be the choice of this family to continue with the status quo regardless of the direction it is going, not by force, but a choice, individually, led by, perhaps, a few well-meaning, yet, perhaps overbearing and/or misguided souls?

If it is true that you can not treat your own family, then does that not hold true for every member of the family?

Can a family member not expect to hear directly from the person, if there is a problem, rather than send a messenger, in order to prevent further misunderstandings, so that clarification or understanding between the original parties, be more readily be resolved?

I have to challenge myself, sometimes daily to think about such. These questions, while, only the individual can honestly answer, for themselves, are just a few of the questions I asked myself and sought answers to, from within and without. To not only be aware of and talk about the problems, but, place the focus on the solutions. I am most often, however, as miniscule as it may be, if I look hard enough, am aware enough, and opened enough to be capable to find such optimism, able to find it, whether in the world or myself.

Again, is it not, one thing to experience such behaviors from the world, one would hope not from family and friends? One can dislike a behavior( as defined above) of another without subjecting another human to a feeling or thought of a rejection of their total being, who they are or their potential of being. Shouldn’t such a clear distinction be made? It is my hope such that I have succeeded in my attempt to do so here,

For clarity I am not rejecting any of you of the “who” that you are or capable of becoming, but I am discussing behavior. That is learned and/or taught through a variety of allegedly acceptable mediums.

One of many mottos I like is –“ prepare for the worse, but expect the best”, understand for me it is a choice.

It is not me, that have, is, or will, choose to walk away from, my love and/or friendship. Though I have some progression to do on the reciprocational aspect, and my ability to fully accept what comes, as it is more and readily easier for me to give.

It is hardly based, either. on a physical locality.

I just have a problem in the accepting of the non-acceptance of something that should not be a issue. I feel the time I have spent learning, developing, and living from the good, as well as, the bad experiences has been instrumental in my becoming a better human. and in ever expanding ability to empathized with other human beings.

Although, it saddens and pains me deeply when I hear of anyone, it is especially hits hard for me hearing of those children or young adults who could not endure the pain and negativity and are no longer with us, I deeply empathize.

It also deeply saddens me when I can at times, clearly see, the unused or undiscovered potential that we all have and the choices certain friends and family members have made to see it as a liabilty rather than an asset. There are certain things I learned that I was taught to be my greatest assets that were in fact my greatest liabilities and some of my greatest liabilities, were in fact my greatest assets.

There are those who may see my life as wasted, but there are those I know that have patiently waited, had the faith, love, and trust to allow me to make and learn from some similar and different mistakes, that I have made something with and in my life. And , though while I may not have the tangible physical wealth, I feel a wealth in a sense of spirit, heart, friendship, and family and most importantly love. This being just one of many steps taken for even more opportunities of learning, growth, in the furtherance, and towards a goal of self-actualization.

To those friends and family, this is not, nor should be taken as a guilt trip, either, while I have no control how this will be interpreted, it would/will be, and is your choice, individually. This is written, with the ideal towards and of an everlasting patience faith of love.

I thank – the God, as I understand and/or choose to define and/or call( higher power, something greater than myself, whatever works, for each of you individually, (collective unconscious, … .etc..), for the sense of guidance, unconditional love, friendship, family, and spiritual principles that guide my life, – that I have experienced because of that relationship and other family and friends relationships – and that at the times most needed, has by guiding and/or placing me and/or reminding me of one of the simple, yet at times, seemingly impossible to see, of the truths and possibilities, in others and myself.

That I am not a mistake, I do and can having meaning and purpose.

That there is, however, you define it a _________> self , that if sought and/or based in reality and/or spiritual principles, available

That while at times I may be alone, but, because of the sense of that and those relationships, and the relationship i have nurtured with myself, I am never lonely. Unless, I choose to be.

It will always remain a choice – my unconditional love and empathy, which I have now, that will continue to grow, and learn, for each of you, and the human being that you are today, and the limitless potentials yet to be discovered, are that of which I choose to see and focus on. Despite the seeming, at times, insistence of some to try to force my attention back to the negative or to choose for me which, what, and how, my memories should be.

I am determined to continue to be happy, discover, challenge myself, view in an overall positive manner, life. For, again, as with most experiences, this letter, if nothing else comes from it, I have learned and challenged myself to discover, grow, and learn from new behaviors to further better myself, to mature, to laugh at and with myself (some of the best medicine I’ve found, not taking myself so seriously all the time), to find the humor in most all things, towards the expansion of the foundation and structure of my life.

I see it even here and now.

And for those who may think otherwise, I’ll even put it in writing here for all to see, I know I do not know everything or am perfect (close though, :-) ), I do know though, that I am perfectly imperfect, a human. That has made some of the same errors as we all do, have. and will.

But, I am confident that while I have, will, and do make mistakes (although few, as there are, :-) ), as well as, the successes (to many to list, :-) ) , it is, though, what I choose to do about either the mistakes and/or successes.

Whether, I learn from them and/or challenge myself and/or change and/or accept and/or continue the behavior(s), or not.

That for me, “failure isn’t falling down it is staying down.” – I can, do, and will start anew at any time throughout the span of my life, as needed, depending on the choice to empower such choices in order to make an informed decision(s) towards any decision(s), goal(s), or opportunity(s), I alone, might or must face. And what we, as a whole, have, will, and must, also.

For me, all of this it is an integral part of who I am today with the sum of those experiences had, continuing to edit, expand, and grow with experiences, that has yet to occur.

Freedom from that which tends to hinder, trip, or block a human spirit from attaining their humaness.

Is it not a choice? Individually.

Succeed ….Laugh at the hate and let it go…. I am almost there

This letter is rhetorical because if understood the understanding to make an informed decision is understood – on this it just shouldn’t matter.

The only human view or opinion or discussion one could possible have is to the how (clarity of presentation – discussion of my experiences and the reasoning and/or formulation/references/suggestions for certain attitudes/perspectives/ideas based on facts/reality/science/study/exposure/spiritual principles used as examples or drawn from personal and shared experience(s), the beginning of my awareness and their development, to the confrontational aspect or content ), but not to the what (substantive part(s), overall intent, how I presented my heart) was written.

To make a suggestion is an entirely different topic if one follows the basic idea that, to suggest is the only real form in which you can truly give/share/provoke thought in yourself and/or with another. It is then the others choice to interpret and determine what level of influence or what, they will or will not do with it, and should, if appropriate, contain any consequences that pertain.

That is, IT IS TRUELY A PERSON’S CHOICE, individually, to accept, reject, alter in their own development, individually, geared to age appropriateness, in an effort to assist them to learn how and to make an informed decision(s).

The only ones who possible could and or does have a correct and perfect opinion or view or discussion between, about who I am, would be the God (greatly misinterpreted, underestimated, and misunderstood) of my understanding and myself at this point in my life and possibly, others with similar experiences, or those with at least the capacity of empathy.

This in no way discounts the many views/opinions or discussions I have had, have, or will have. As there are many opinions and views I have experienced and have yet to. They are and have been priceless, lifesaving, guiding, inspirational, and of substantive and sustainable value, that are an integral part of what, how, where, and when, that has, is , and will lend themselves to the discovery, acceptance, continued development, and heart of who I am today. And the limitlessness of the possibilities, unique to each individual, yet to come.

But there are certain topics, truths that while certain persons may insist they still have an opinion or view on I have gone to the top authority on many or they are shared opinions of between individuals that have done the same or similar understandings. So it would be my suggestion on this matter for anyone who feels their opinion or view or relationship with the top authority is more right or better would strongly encourage them to do the same, ask.(We’ve talked (not so much how, just that we/i do), we like each other. Still do.)

There are somethings that we can agree to disagree. But, there are certain issues no such right and/or authority, other than, that between each individual and an entity (of and/or if, their choice), truly exist. The “who” of , who I am, is one such issue.

    Natural versus behavior.

The alleged “problem” is no longer, and quite frankly, never was mine. I have sought , asked for, worked for, and/or been given/shown the tools, and experiences to find the path towards finding real solutions and a sense of continuing accomplishment in my travels through and in life.

Without those, who have had much to contribute, words are limiting – Thank you,

Take what you can use and leave the rest.

-through my eyes and heart –

your friend, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, …

    – to the rest of us, whom may have, or hopefully, has not had, to endure such, have remained in my thoughts, heart, and unconditional love. That you, too , are have and are, finding the increasing unconditional love.

    with unconditional love,

Spewing stupidity on the internet is like shitting yourself on a public train. People may not know who it was exactly, but they still have to smell your shit when they happen to pass by.

      • wayne lock

Joseph I will gladly and unashamedly tell People I would rather smell shit than to hear the hate shit some people continue to spew at each other and themselves it is getting clearer in the hate of the post Joseph is posting to what affect the guardians have influence Joseph’s thinking unless again Joseph who said on November 1,2011 the above is affected by the guardians and is one, the constitution of hate is a behavior that I find non-conducive to seeking solutions
with unconditional love, solidarity, I empathize

We must be renewed by the cleansing of our minds.

Words only exist to those who have concepts of them, what of the deaf, the blind? Their visions of words are different from from those with five functioning senses. It’s only until we transcend physical reality will be become enlightened, and merge with the universal consciousness.

This might sound too heavy or loopy or out there. And it is. Technology is not the answer, the Internet is not the answer. These are tools, but should be used with caution. Just as religion is a tool — simultaneously illuminating and oppressing. Tools, like a hammer, can build a house or crush a skull. The more powerful the tool, the more potent its outcomes. Focusing on online forums, the Internet, technology, even occupations, oppresses those who can not participate for their physical condition limits them. Transcend the physical.

Hypocrisy hides where we least expect it. I noticed many of us have Gmail accounts. I am one of them. Google is vertically integrating, and is positioning itself to have a monopoly on the currency of the future: information. Transcend the temptation.

i challenge us all to truly examine ourselves from outside ourselves. The impoverished child in a developing country who has nothing but smiles with her entire being is the sort of consciousness we need to embrace. But that is only the door to true wisdom and understanding. Transcend our understanding.

we must live in wonder, questioning always. The answers are limitless, but the questions are what drives change. Rooted in the spirit and denying the ego its right to existence, we will prevail. To prevail is not to win, it is not to undergo a new or renewed status quo, but rather, to espouse our rightful place as stewards of the earth not masters, of brothers and sisters, not nations and ethnicities. True revolution begins with the mind. Where is your mind?

    • stephan

not sure how to transcend use of technology…mind melding? Possible but likely unsuccessful tool for organization at this time. “mind cleansing” seems to verge on tools for verbal indoctrination. I like “live in wonder” but the question of ego is far more developed in spiritual and psychological tomes than in organization meetings at Wall Street.

    I like most of POS.

I am not sure what the third one means: “Recognizing individuals’ inherent privilege and the influence it has on all interactions;” Can you write it in more common English.
Instead of “Redefining how labor is valued” (which is what the global corporations have been doing to us) maybe we should say something like “Value labor over capital”
And maybe the seventh should be “The belief that education is a human right and responsibility” Since rights and responsibilities always come in pairs.

Lastly I don’t think that open source has a place in this document. I like the idea of open source, but it doesn’t rise to the level of the other universal points in the document.

Also please post newer versions so we can see what you are working on, and try to date them so we know where we stand.

One last thing, please ask the website admin to put the most important pronouncements of the GA, like the POS and the Declaration of the Occupation on the home page so that new comers and media know exactly what we have consensed on. I have asked but got no response.

Thank you for your patience and your impatience, John McG

should it not be place life over all things labor or capital unless capital is defined as labor and labor is defined as working for capital Life

Where can I find a statement of purpose? Is there one? If there is one and I just can’t find it-I apologize in advance But I have been all over the internet looking for something to that effect and can’t find it which I think in itself is a problem. I am inspired by how many people have joined this movement and I support it but I don’t see how clear and effective action can be taken without at least one specific actionable suggestion for how to accomplish that change. We need to start someplace-anyplace-with a concrete goal to work towards-even if it’s not a perfect-all encompassing action that will fix all problems and right all wrongs it doesn’t matter-pick a goal-accomplish it and pick another. Maybe we could start by finding a way to end corporate person hood-that would address many of the grievances listed. I hate to see this movement grasping in all directions-like an animal with multiple arms and legs but no head. This movement needs LEADERSHIP and definiteness of purpose to survive much longer.

    • Robert Cortez

You won’t find what you’re looking for, because it’s not there. Everyone in the movement is a leader. There is no hierarchical order and in fact the movement has purposefully rejected such order. Consensus is the closest you will find to the conventional idea of “leadership”.

These principles are the beginning of developing that consensus. You can contribute your specific ideas within these guidelines that you believe should be part of the movement going forward. Myself I’m working on campaign and election reforms that can be made through the initiative process.

    • Bart Dabson

We’re an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week, but all of the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a 2/3 majority in the case of more pressing matters. The only people we hate more than the evil bankers and corporate scumbags are the Wall Street Occupation Congregation of New Hampshire and the Wall Street Occupation Alliance. Solidarity Sister!

I was just wondering exactly when was this first proposed and initiated.

    • Solomon Bothwell

i too would like to find more information about the original drafting of the ‘principles.’ i support them but i question the wording of the final principle and the choice to use ‘open source’ (a word which strips all political sentiment from the free-software movement and reduces it to purely economic terms).

i know that in los angeles (where i am) we have ratified these principles as is and i assume many other occupations have done the same. i am worried that the principles will continue to be adopted without critical discourse and analysis.

are there minutes/notes available from the meetings where the ‘principles’ were drafted? i am curious if it was a conscious decision to use the term ‘open source’ or simple mixup of terminology?

  28. Stephen Nightingale

Doing the right thing is not disobedience. Please replace civil disobedience with civil duty.

    • Chema

Good point. In my opinion it would be better to talk about civil resistance, in the line of Thoreau who sees it as a civil duty of the citizen to confront and immoral government. Thanks.

Why is “The belief in health care as a human right” NOT in this list?

  30. Dobber

Since demands will change over time, I would suggest that one goal of the group should be to:
    – implement a political mechanism to ensure that the voice of citizens/electorate is always greater than that of the rich/elite. (re-word as needed).
And one such mechanism that could be an action item would be to get behind a national linitiative and referendum legislative effort. That would be a permanent accomplishment of the group that would allow the people to bypass a corrupt Congress and submit their own legislation as demands change in the future.
It would also help galvanize support of the large percentage of people who no longer vote because of feeling disenfranchised.

    • Albert

I must admit I am a laymen when it comes to social activism an politics. I would suggest a National Occupy Convention. Below are a list of simple attainable goals, that as part of the 99%, I would like to see addressed.

      1. Set term limits, (2 terms ideally), for ALL elected officials Senetors, Congressman, and Judges (Including the Supreme Court). No lifetime appointments. This will go a long way in disrupting the influence of corporations.
      2. Abolish the electoral college… This is a system which underminds the only power that the 99% relies on……. The Right to Vote…
      3. Repeal NAFTA.. and close ALL loopholes on US corporations that take jobs away from our economy…
      4. Secure the collective bargaining rights of the US workforce… Every state should be a right to work state..

      • RandyCH

Right on Albert. Goals that would be great except the entrenched slimeball politicians would have to vote them in—FAT CHANCE. The Supreme Court is a joke made up of senile, out of touch idiots. They can’t even define the words “pornography” nor “life” yet they rule on both topics. Unions do much more harm than good, too, thanks for #4.

      • Kim Hewitt

“Right to work states” do not protect collective bargaining rights. They protect the rights of individuals to not join unions, thus undercutting the strength of the union. Individuals who decide not to join a union are still protected by union bargains, but do not pay union fees. In some states (like Texas) the “right to work” is an obstacle to unionizing workers.

Keep it up guys!!! You have my full support!!

I also have a suggestion– and that is that perhaps you could consider making it a priority to demand a monthly federal referendum in the United States.

With online technology, there really is no reason why the people cannot participate more directly in their governments. Information is more easily shared than ever– and we need to start using this technology for the proper purpose. We have the capacity to allow everyone to make informed decisions that actually matter– why are we not doing it??

These decisions must become a bigger priority in our schools and in our homes and in our communities. If people felt more involved, then they would feel more valued by society… and restoring faith in ourselves as people who are capable of doing good things and who matter is something that you can’t put a price on. Everyone needs a chance to live WITH and not UNDER their government.

Communication is probably the most important thing in a relationship, and I think that the biggest problem is that the relationship that the government has with its citizens is broken.

    Thank you for reading this!

  34. Chema

I would like to read more on how the occupy movements are “autonomous political beings engaged in non-violent civil disobedience.” Do you have any post on this, any minutes or workshops… Who are your references in civil disobedience or rather civil resistance? who are your references in non-violence?

    Principles of Solidarity….

If it were to be known or even documented!

This working group has established a blog, its to expose the oppression by those who feel marginalized by the actions of a few who do not carry the aspirations of the movement as a guilding force.

  37. john pianka

could we have the official ows recognized definitions of the words in this principal i believe there are many ways to interpret this document

  38. Cruz

Solidarity? Isnt that what we are fighting?

There is a reason that this movement does not have a single, unitary goal. It is because the purpose of this GA and all other similar bodies which exist should be to give people a place where they can be heard and listen to others be heard. We are not the Tea Party. We are not and should not attempt to make this movement into a single monolithic enity. Instead dissent and dilerberation should be encouraged.

Enough of this “We are the 99%” stuff. This is why republicans (which are a large portion of the population, whether you like it not) dont like you. Most people had no say in the creation of this document and that fact should be pointed out clearly. This document represents the opinions of those who made it, not 99% of the population. I should be me and you should be you.

This movement should be more about providing actual freedom to every single person and less about complaing about your lack material wealth.
Capitalism is not a bad thing, it is just that our antiquated political system has allowed abuse to occur.
The government should not be there to provide people with wealth nore should it be there to take it away from people. It should only provide people with the freedom to create thier own wealth and to not be tyranized by the wealth of others.

I actually is very well written, I was somewhat surprised being used to dogmatic yah yah… Still would like a snappier title…but upon reflection it’s probably best not to fix something that is not broke.
Nice to absorb something that makes sense and speaks to you and for you.
    Thank you for writing it.
