Site Migration and Downtime Tonight!

Posted by & filed under Site News.

Hey everyone,

Tonight we’re going to be doing a migration of this site over to a new, better server.  If this goes well, we will also be re-pointing the nycga.net/cc domains over to the new server for the world to see.  In order to preserve all the content that you lovely people have put into this site already, we’ll need to take it down sometime later tonight to make a final copy of the data.  Sorry for the inconvenience!

best.

Announcing: Like Button has arrived!

Posted by & filed under Site News.

Ok. So for the past 2 days, we’ve been so excited to see everyone starting to use the site. As the activity stream has filled up with awesome posts, we’ve all been itching to express our deep appreciation of what is going on around the park and on the site. The thing is, not every nod of appreciation warrants a full comment. Who has time to comment when we’re all so busy trying to change the world? So, we did some brainstorming and mind-mapping, and omni-graphing and came up with an incredible new innovation in social networking that we’re pretty sure no one else has ever thought of!

Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you: THE LIKE BUTTON.

You know the drill. ;)

Update: Just to be clear, this is not a Facebook Like button. It is an NYCGA like button. We do have sharing buttons for all the major players on many posts, events, pages, etc but that is external and different than the like buttons, comments, and favorites that are part of the social network that we’re building here.

NYC GENERAL ASSEMBLY DAY 30

Process: Hand signals. Hands up – I like it. Middle – I’m on the fence. Fingers down – I don’t agree. One finger UP: Point of information – for factual information. Triangle: point of process. A system of step up step back – if you are from a traditionally privileged group please leave space for people from minorities by rethinking whether you need to say what you want to say.

Announcing: Events System Live!

Posted by & filed under Site News.

We are very pleased to announce that our events management and scheduling system is now live on the site. We were hoping to have it before our soft-launch last week, but when you start to play with it, we’re pretty confident you’ll agree that it was well worth the wait.

It offers a huge range of features which have all be custom-tailored to best serve the NYCGA Community and the various groups therein. Some of the majors features you’ll find:

  • An ‘Upcoming Events’ section in the right sidebar of all pages. This gives you quick access to the next bunch of events on the docket so you don’t miss a thing!
  • A detailed “Events” tab. This is the hub of the events system and lets you view all events in the future. You can search for events between any date range, any category, any group, and even display events only from the groups of which you are currently a member!
  • Group Admin and Mods can create new events from the Group>Events tab. After you enter in all the relevant information about your event, it will be added to the calendar and the activity feed will show that you created it. The event creation page allows you lots of flexibility, including recurring event series (for those daily or weekly meetings), Google Maps integration for locations around the city, and a “Location Details” field to describe exactly where in the park you will be meeting, or how to get upstairs at 16 Beaver.
  • Entire events stream is available as an RSS feed, making it completely open and transparent with the rest of the web.
And that just scratches the surface. We invite you to check out the new features and begin filling your group with all the events that keep this occupation moving forward at such an incredible pace.
Happy Broswing!
