Safer Spaces is a group working to make Occupy Wall Street an anti-oppressive place for everyone including, but not limited to: women, people of color, immigrants, elders, youth, and people who are queer, trans*, gender non-conforming, differently-abled, undocumented, houseless, and/or those with less structural power and privilege. We all have a responsibility to make Occupy Wall Street as safe as possible through community justice processes rather than relying on the institutionalized criminal justice system, including police.
Since the occupation began, there have been a number of instances of sexual harassment, assault, and oppressive language and actions. In order to actively confront inexcusable behavior we have created a Safer Spaces Support Team. We will strive to maintain a constant presence at Occupy Wall Street in order to respond to threatening actions that continue systematic forms of oppression. We are a resource for those harmed to get support, and to provide ways to hold people who have done harm accountable for their behavior.
While the Support Team is a direct response to an immediate need the working group also plans to:
* Organize trainings on consent, survivor support, anti-racism, confronting male supremacy, anti-oppressive behavior, etc.
* Facilitate the drafting of a community agreement
* Collaborate with other working groups
* Propose alternatives when community agreements are broken
* And more!
We want to have teams of at least 2-3 people at Occupy Wall Street at all times. Please contact us sign up for a shift on the Safer Spaces Support Team.
