We wrote a 325-page public comment letter highlighting loopholes in the Volcker Rule that the Banks may abuse. The Volcker Rule is a new regulation that bans most proprietary trading (i.e. speculation) at Banks. It doesn’t go into effect until July 2012, and we are working to urge the regulators to protect the people, not the banks!

See our minutes in the Docs section!

We meet every Thurs 8pm at 60 Wall St.

Background:
The Dodd-Frank Act was passed last year. Sections 619 and 620 of Dodd-Frank cover what is known as “The Volcker Rule”, which puts limits on proprietary trading by banks and non-bank financial companies.

The SEC and the banking regulators are now required to actually implement Sections 619 and 620 through regulations.

Whenever a federal agency proposes a substantive new regulation, by law it is required to seek public comment first. Normally the only parties that respond to agency comment requests are the companies that are affected by the regulations, and their attorneys (i.e. lawyers at the investment banks, in this case). As you might guess, their comments are always critical of regulation.

The SEC/banking regulators have proposed their regulations for implementing Volcker, and they are requesting comments from the public.

Here are both the directions for submitting a comment, and the rule text itself (all 300 pages of it!): http://www.sec.gov/rules/proposed/2011/34-65545.pdf

It’s pretty egregious but unfortunately the Volcker Rule in its current form would not hinder this kind of […]

How about we give a reason for thumbs down instead of just hating? That’s basically ruining these forums.

e.g. #StepDownDimon #movemoneyoutofbanks #nostudentdebtrepay, etc. If we all tweeted 6 or 8 times/day, it might help. Is there a marketing person here who could help?

thanks, @monjon22 and @reno -How about a viral twitter campaign? It’s not hard to set up. It could support moving money out of banks.
