Want to help facilitate, take stack, or keep time at a GA or Spokes Council? You don’t have to come to any meetings. You just have to fill out THIS FORM.
The Facilitation Committee is a neutral body that assists in facilitating the NYC General Assembly by utilizing a direct democratic process as well as additional inclusive and progressive radical concepts. Facilitation meets at 4pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in the Atrium at 60 Wall Street.
We hold Direct Democracy trainings at 5:30pm everyday in the Atrium at 60 Wall Street.
For the days that we do not meet as a full group (Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sun), there will be at least one member of our Working Group at the Atrium to receive proposals for the General Assembly or Spokes Council. You can find this person from 5.30pm to 7pm on the Pine Street side of the Atrium, sitting at the pillar nearest to the subway station entrance.
Sub Groups
Below is a list of sub-groups w/ contact info. Following that is a more detailed description of several sub-groups.
• Anti-Oppression – Brian/Ethan – briankellymusic@me.com
• Training – Marisa – marisaholmes@gmail.com
• Stewarding the transition – Steve –
• Facilitation Ethics – Jason – Jashelto@gmail.com
• Structure of Spokes & GA – Sefan – finn.fink@gmail.com

Anti-Oppression – The great strength of OWS is its claim of inclusiveness. Yet the privileges some of us enjoy and the denial of privileges that others of us experience in the world seem to be repeated within our movement. These infractions are reminders of tremendous pain, frustration and diminishment. Disenfranchisement is systemic and serves the status quo. Anyone who wants to develop understanding of and agreements between those who have been consistently shunned and those who are enjoying the privileges of power is encouraged to contribute. The immediate effort will be to arrange direct conversation between those with perceived privilege & those who experience any slight at the hands of fellow members of OWS. We will seek to schedule trainings in \\\”anti-oppression\\\”, set-up conversations and form agreements.
Facilitation ethics – The purpose of this sub-group is to make observations of conflicts and concerns about facilitation, examine the feelings surrounding them, identify the needs for resolution, and take action based on those needs. This aids in the evolution of the consensus process, and provides a venue for grievances to be heard in a safe and constructive environment. Our meeting times are shared through private e-mail and the facilitation google group.
Spokes Membership Proposal – To address the lingering question of membership in the Operational Spokes Council with the intention of drafting a proposal to present to the OSC as a way to establish an empowered and operational decision making body.
Proposals Support – Proposal Support comprises two things: first, an open dialogue group discussing ways to transparently streamline, support, and facilitate the proposal process and other elements of \\\”pre-facilitation.\\\” Second, a team proactively offering you information about the proposal process and, for proposers who want it, neutral transparent assistance in developing your proposals. Come talk with us!
GAs in Inclement Weather – This sub Group focuses on what the protocol will be as the weather changes and gets colder. We believe its not sustainable to continue to have GA outside in a New York winter. We would like to set a protocol for how we function during bad weather we hope to set an acceptable standard for using consensus to move the GA inside when we really need to.
Alternative Facilitation Practices – This subgroup is focused on the study and practice of alternative facilitation processes such as Open Space, World Cafe, Circles, Appreciative Inquiry and Theory U.

Facilitation 1 week, 4 days agodont get me wrong, i want the GAs to go viral. yet having an “unreasonable” number like 100 for the main OWS GA should really force us to use them as an outreach tool. each local GA can decide how big […]

Facilitation 1 week, 5 days agoSean,
Completely agree! A diversity of assemblies is essential as it is what is coming forward from autonomous clusters. The chronology of events suggests that the things that don’t work for the GA tend to […] -

Facilitation 1 week, 5 days agoLiza,
I disagree, and agree. Weird, I know – but quorum should be contextual, and based on just what “group authorization” is trying to be used. On-the-fly GAs would be beneficial to exist and it’s great […]

Facilitation 1 week, 5 days agoGreat post Sean.
My only comment is that QUORUM should be higher. We should set the bar to 100. This is necessary, if only because it would force us to do community outreach on a continual basis to meet the […]

Facilitation 1 week, 5 days ago@sumumba The term “ego needs” is so right-on! They could be considered some of the higher needs in Maslow’s hierarchy, maybe the 4th and 5th level: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs. […]

Facilitation 1 week, 5 days agoThere were some flaws in the process we were using – I use the word flaws, specifically, because there were contradictions within the process which were counterproductive for reaching consensus.
I have been […]

Facilitation 2 weeks, 3 days ago-2… Guess people’s feelings are hurt that I feel being ethical isn’t the only qualification to run an organization? Y’all can downvote me into negative territory, facts are facts.

1) Failure to enforce civility stemmed from a bigger problem. There was a failure of […]

Facilitation 2 weeks, 6 days agoConsensus-based decision-making involves the buy-in and consent of the group as a whole. Ultimately, this makes it slow-moving and unwieldy, but thankfully tends to find more correct answers (or at least more […]
