Draft Document

6:18-

From the General Assembly of the Occupy Wall Street movement, To the People of the World we offer a preliminary Declaration of our Vision.

Our Vision is that of  [1] a free, democratic, and just society;  [2] where we, the people, come together and solve our problems by consensus;  [3] where people are encouraged to take personal responsibility and participate in decision making; [4] where political and economic institutions work to benefit all, not just a privileged few;  [5] where we learn to live in harmony and embrace principles of toleration and respect for the differing views of others;  [6] where we secure the civil and human rights of all from infringement by tyrannical forces and unjust governments;  [7] where we provide full and free education to everyone, not merely to get jobs but to grow and flourish as human beings;  [8] where we value human needs over monetary gain, because when people lack security, education, or a standard of living adequate for their well being, effective democracy is impossible;  [9] where we work together to protect the global environment to ensure that future generations will have safe and clean air, water, and food supplies, and will be able to enjoy the beauty and bounty of nature that past generations have enjoyed.

Michael : 6:23 – need comprehensive document

Liz : 6:25 – specifics are needed

Friendly amendments – adding “preliminary draft” to the wording, adding  historical documents to the document, adding specific working including …

Concerns over the necessity to release this document as soon as possible. Concerns over the necessity to make sure all of the people can agree with the document.

Friendly amendment to add climate change to [9]

Friendly amendment to give 24 hours to allow for reflection of document. This would allow for any editing.

7:44 – To avoid redundancy, include historical documents, take out small words. Friendly amendment is not accepted

Blocks have to be for severe ethical, moral, or safety concern that would cause you to leave the movement.

Friendly amendment- concerns over proposal, concerns over blocks.

If there is a critical change that is needed before the document is proposed

To take this language as it is stated in front of the GA on Saturday

8:00

2 blocks – 1. Leah 2. Zosara

1. Concerned that “we” are going to get this out. Ethical concern that other people may have concerns over this document. Going against the process. A friendly amendment is made that all of the people concerned have a say in the document. Friendly amendment – to take the document and put it on the email list- forum so that people can suggest any changes. Accepted.

2. The second block is ethically concerned because the input of the group as a whole is not involved at this meeting. Friendly amendment – to allow anyone to propose changes to the document and that the group will consent on the draft on Saturday. Accepted.

Both friendly amendments are accepted by Frank.

8:18

Frank has requested that the proposed document is put on the GA agenda for Saturday. This document will be posted online to the GA website on November 16, 2011. If there are any friendly amendments that are proposed, the document will go through the consensus process during the vision/goals working group meeting on Saturday.  If there are no blocks to the document, the document will be proposed to the GA on Saturday. This timeframe allows for a three day time window for any friendly amendments to be brought up. Accepted.

After accepting the friendly amendments and satisfying the two blocks, which required that the document be posted online for three days to allow for any additional friendly proposals, it was the consensuses of the group that this document would be presented (with any additional amendments that the group consented upon) to the GA on Saturday in order to seek their consensus to publish this as an official document of the movement.
