Environmental Solidarity WG at OWS / 04-09-12 / Monday Meeting Minutes

Facilitator: Ryan

Note-taker: Russell L.

  1. New York City Environmental Justice Alliance
    1. We now have a connection to them.  They have a campaign against the incineration of garbage and Pete went to their picket, which was impressive (30 people at a Monday morning action…).  And Eddie Bautista is impressive too; he’s their coordinator / contact person.
    2. The NYC Environmental Justice Alliance includes UPROSE and some groups from the South Bronx.
  2. Report-Back of Russell’s outreach at the Interdependence Project
    1. Representing the WG, Russell was on a panel at the Interdependence Project, for a Q&A after a Gasland showing.  He got a list of people who now want to be in the Google Group and might come out for Earth Day.
  3. April 21 and 22
    1. Joel of NLG is here.  Tonight he’ll look into this “Section 14” that talks about how parades are not allowed on Sundays before 2pm.
    2. After long discussion (resurrecting an issue from last meeting), the group reached informal consensus on “the death of Earth as we know it,” instead of “the death of Earth”
    3. The flyer should promote who’ll be there, such as Hellen Caldicott and Rude Mechanical Orchestra
    4. Maybe this flyer becomes two sheets, one for each day
    5. Joel will put out the call for NLG presence on 21 and 22
    6. Joel:  Whether you get shut down / arrested as soon as you show up with paint (or something paint-like) possibly depends on the cops (that is, which cops are there and what their temperament is).  I suggest a very clean operation, bringing your own dropcloth.
      1.                                       i.     If you’re part of this operation, we will want to get your names down (and your gender) in case of arrest
    7. Joel:  When you’re trying not to get arrested, the most important thing is to be able to claim that you’re not blocking traffic.
    8. At the melt-in, we melt.  We lie there for like 5 min.  They give the order to disperse.  We get up.  No arrests.  Then we transition to getting on the trains for an Eco-TRAINING.
      1.                                       i.     We need a police liaison for this.
      2.                                     ii.     The melt-in happens after a banner drop and a mic check
        1. We have to make the message clear.
        2. The banner should be about climate change, in addition to the banner Tim had in mind about MTA’s use of tropical hardwoods
    9. We could walk around with posters/banners inside Grand Central
    10. We need to make 3 giant banners in 3 weeks.  We work with Tim and Tim works with us.
      1.                                       i.     We want…
        1. a Spectra banner (priority)
        2. a climate change banner for the 21st to drop
        3. an MTA banner for the 21st to drop
        4. our fracking banner to hold on to
        5. our fukushima banner to hold on to
        6.                                     ii.     We will ask arts and culture if they want to help us with a banner, and we’ll learn about what their capacities to help are
        7.                                    iii.     In between now and Friday we can throw out (onto the Google Group, for everyone’s review) possible slogans for the banners
    11. The Eco-TRAINING should be on the flyer
    12. Coffin can be provided by John
  4. Rio+20 declarations
    1. Robert:  Melanie and I going to get together on this.
  5. Occupy Climate
    1. Robert:  Saturday-May 5this a big day for 350, when they “connect the dots between climate change and extreme weather.”
      1.                                       i.     Robert:  We should see if anything is planned for NYC
      2.                                     ii.     Robert:  It’s also International Tar Sands Action Day
      3.                                    iii.     Pete:  We want to be another dot.  We want to connect the dots between climate change and the corporations and Wall St.
        1. Ken:  We should go to the People’s Assembly and have a table there.  Maybe 2-3 of us flyering.
          1. Tom can bring a table.  Pete will help Tom know the details.
  6. May Day
    1. the Green Bloc idea is moving slowly forward.  We need to collaborate with the Eco-Cluster and the Eco Buddies and 99forEarth on this.
      1.                                       i.     Leon will be our point person for our May Day collaborations/plans
      2.                                     ii.     We should have these groups come to our meeting on Friday
    2. Between 4:00 and 5:30 there will be speechmaking opportunities, a la soapboxing.  Some of us could come ready to give speeches
  7. Announcements
    1. Delay (sp?):  New York City is about to take a public park and let people make money off of it, through the work of Diana Taylor (Bloomberg’s girlfriend), who is insidiously on the boards of Sotheby’s and Marlborough and Hudson River Valley Trust.
    2. Russell:  I am going to the 99% Spring training, the one that is fracking angled and will have people we know there from Tar Sands and UFA.  It is Saturday-April 14 from 12:00-7:00pm at Park Slope Methodist Church.  You can sign up.  I’ll outreach there for April 21 and 22.
    3. Robert:  If you are on Facebook, connect to our Working Group and promote its stuff.  That’s actually a pretty useful/powerful tool.
    4. Joel:  I’m in a case right now against NYC and it looks like the City will feel free to straight-up remove trees from housing projects, to clear the way for things like charter schools.
