OWS Environmental Solidarity WG / 03-23-12 / Friday Meeting Minutes

Facilitator: Minori

Note-taker: Russell

  1. Introductions
  2. Report-backs
    1. Million-Hoodie March (Trayvon Martin)
      1.                                       i.     There may have been 7000 people in Union Square.  It was organized by—as far as we know—TM’s parents, and Occupy the Hood
    2. The Boiler Dilemma
      1.                                       i.     This went well.  The three speakers were
        1. Chris Benedict, the greenest architect in NY
        2. a sales rep of Tri-State Biodiesel
        3. Ron Kamen, the president of NYSEA
      2.                                     ii.     It was about the NYC mandate to get No. 6 oil out of your homes as a source of heat.  That law was written with EDF, which is a pro-business environmental organization that takes fracking money.  The event was about alternatives to switching to natural gas, as many people will do in response to the law.
      3.                                    iii.     Russell:  It was a surprise to me, and it’s not what I’m used to, that all three panelists were for-profit.  At some moments, it felt that the three were competing with one another to get your business as you look to avoid heating your home with natural gas.  (That’s not fun.)
    3. Vandana Shiva
      1.                                       i.     This event also went well.  It was small (40 people?) compared to the large number of people who were at Union Square.  But is was pretty powerful.  She talked about the corporate control of our food supply.  She spoke for only about ten minutes, which was a shock.
      2.                                     ii.     Pete:  There’s video.  I’ll get it out to you when I have it.
      3.                                    iii.     Pete:  It really reminded me of the early days of Liberty Square.
    4. 99forEarth / Disrupt Dirty Power work party on Wednesday
      1.                                       i.     Russell:  The 99forEarth team and I painted and markered and crayoned on the materials/props for Disrupt Dirty Power and our stuff is going to look really good.  This was a long work party (like 11 hours, at Kobi’s house).
  3. Upcoming events
    1. Occupy Town Square (March 25)
      1.                                       i.     11am: Climate Apocalypse with Cookies (Patrick’s)
      2.                                     ii.     1pm:  Eliminate Bad Gas (ours)

—-off-agenda conversation about whether Goosewatch activities can bear the name of the WG—

Johanna has a teach-in on Sunday too (on the geese) and wants to know if the web posting of that event can go along with / take the name of the WG like the other two teach-ins.  After some dispute, this idea is twinkled through.  15 minutes at least of next meeting will be devoted to the question of why animals tend not to fit into the larger conversation about environmentalism, since—for Johanna—they are the same cause/ethic.

———————————————back to being on-agenda——————————————

  1. Disrupt Dirty Power (March 24)
    1.                                       i.     overview of the event; be at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at 5pm tomorrow
    2.                                     ii.     Pete:  We still need a police liaison.  Tim will do it.
    3.                                    iii.     Ken emailed Joel of NLG.
    4. Nuclear Teach-In (March 31)
      1.                                       i.     this event, on the connection between nuke power and nuke weapons, has moved to Union Square
        1. A lot of OWS activities have moved to Union Square, but this is not to say that it is the official occupation of OWS or the capital of OWS.  Liberty Square will continue to be important too, as far as we can tell.
          1. Donna:  I also have a teach-in.  It will be to teach people how to create energy between their hands and do energy healing.  Details to come.
    5. Occupy Gibson (April 1)
      1.                                       i.     Tim:  We have lots to pool from in terms of the song we use on that day.  Johanna’s Norwegian Wood song, Johanna’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps song, and Luna’s Norwegian Wood song.
      2.                                     ii.     Tim:  Somebody I sent an email to really shot me down.
      3.                                    iii.     Pete:  We’re going to need guitar players and singers.  Also, we should assume that we’re going to be cut off/kicked out after maybe only one verse.
      4.                                    iv.     It should be flash mob style.
      5.                                     v.     One person should film.  dancers too?
      6.                                    vi.     Ken:  I talked to Ray Korona about this issue and Ray says there are serious problems with that law.  Musicians get their guitars seized in Europe.
        1. Tim:  not because of U.S. law.
    6. Earth Day (April 22)
      1.                                       i.     flyer discussion
        1. Tim:  “take back earth’ or ‘occupy earth’ ____ Day” is another way to look at it.
    7. Earth Day Eco Festival (April 21 and 22)
      1.                                       i.     Donna:  A lot of environmental have booths at this festival.  I will be there for NYC Friends of Clearwater.  Come hang out there.  I could put out flyers for our WG too, or the WG could be there on its own to flyer, etc.
    8. Eco TRAIN-ing / Subway Party
      1.                                       i.     It would be good, for this, to use + Brigades methods
      2.                                     ii.     Maybe we take the party to the SI Ferry, like Tim has done in the past
      3.                                    iii.     Maybe we wear green.  Maybe we cover the lights in the car with green cellophane, truly greening the MTA
      4.                                    iv.     Setting a time (so that we know, and so that it gets on the flyer that we’re going to proliferate this weekend):  Satruday-April 14 at 12pm at Union Square, eventually on our way to an OWS Assembly at Central Park (similar to OTS) that’s going to start at 1pm and go for hours
  2. Next meeting

Next meeting will be at the Licoln Statue on the North Side of Union Square.  We’re going to try this out, at least once.  There are concerns about sound, comfort, able-ness etc. obviously.  We’ll see how viable it is as a meeting space.
