The new DA structure seeks to allow for highly planned autonomous and group actions through creation of an open, accessible, and empowering space for our organizing.
Sunday Meetings: There are two different types of Sunday Meetings, both of which meet from 2-6pm.
- The first and third Sundays of the month will be dedicated to 4 hours of planning, workshopping, and coordinating for the ”Action of the Month” (name to be changed depending on the action being planned). These meetings will include in depth Direct Action Workshops on the ”Action of the Month,” leading to the creation (or coordination) of subgroups dedicated to organizing different aspects of the action. These subgroups will meet outside of structured Direct Action Working Group time and return to coordinate with each other every Sunday.
- The second and fourth Sundays of the month will allow 2 hours for
a) reflection on past actions
b) brainstorming about the current state of the movement and DAs role within it and
c) breakout groups on upcoming actions.
The second 2 hours will be dedicated to coordination of the subgroups involved in planning the ”Action of the Month” and further workshopping/planning.
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Meetings:
These meetings will be focused primarily on Agenda Items specifically related to the functioning of Direct Action as a working group. Meetings will begin with report backs from actions that are already in the works or that are beginning to be worked on. Each group working on an action will have up to 5 minutes to succinctly describe the action they are (or will be) organizing, what they need help with for their action, and the days and times they are (or will be) meeting outside of structured Direct Action Working Group meetings to organize their specific action. This section will be followed by Agenda Items specifically related to the functioning of Direct Action as a working group, including discussion on upcoming Spokes Council agenda items that the Direct Action Working Group needs to come to consensus on prior to that night’s Spokes Council.
Tuesday and Thursday Meetings:
These meetings will be focused on allowing space for outside community organizations and community members to plug into actions that are already in the works as well as bring their own actions to the table. The meetings will start with a 1 minute description from each group planning an action (Breakout Groups), followed by 45 minutes of breakout time during which the various Breakout Groups will disperse and discuss those issues pertinent to pulling of their various actions. There will then be 10 minutes for report backs from the Breakout Groups during which the Breakout Groups will bring back pertinent information discussed/decided upon, including what the group still needs help with in order to pull off their action as well as the days and time(s) of upcoming meetings (outside of structured Direct Action Working Group meetings). This section will be followed by discussion of Agenda Items, with a focus on those Agenda Items that have come out of Breakout Groups (these Agenda Items should be consensed upon in Breakout Groups prior to being brought to the entire Direct Action Working Group). There will also be space for time sensitive Agenda Items of other sorts.
