Strike Debt is having a week of action culminating on March 23rd to highlight the injustice of medical debt. More than half of all bankruptcies in the U.S. are linked to medical debt. Of those who go bankrupt, three quarters of them HAD health insurance.
Inspired by the Rolling Jubilee, an initiative that buys people’s debts and then cancels them, some folks at the Everybody Now! singing in action group came up with a song based on the “You Are Not A Loan” chant. You can see a video of the song here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfvRjX98Ecs.
We will be creating a music video for this song and you’re invited to participate! No dancing skills required…we’ll mostly be marching, and if you can’t march we’ll find some way for you to participate too.
When: Sunday March 17th, 10 AM to 2 PM
Where: Meet at the steps of Federal Hall on Wall Street (aka the Freedom Cage) Please note, we will be moving from this location by 11.
Bring a sign along the theme of “Life or Debt” if you can. The Strike Debt announcement on their website also has some good material for signs: http://strikedebt.org/lifeordebt/
Please RSVP “Going” only if you are sure you can come. If you can come, please take a minute to get familiar with the song.
Hope to see you there. Feel free to bring your friends.
