A workshop by John Schindler and Cynthya BrianKate

The Occupy movement is about social justice. This includes acknowledging and affirming the rainbow of diversity and varied experiences we are all coming from, and appreciating that we all have something to bring to the discussion of the issues Occupy includes. These issues include not only economic justice but also include standing up to all kinds of oppression, discrimination, hate and violence. Come join us as we present a workshop which will cover various topics and issues related to social justice, diversity and education on topics related to anti-hate crime work and the healing of discrimination and violence.

Topics will include

  • Sex and gender minorities 101
  • what do categories like transgender, intersex, intergender, genderqueer, gender-variant and gender-nonconforming mean, and what do they mean to the Occupy movement
  • The role LGBTI (Lesbian,. Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex) and gender-nonconforming people play and have always played in activist, social justice and peace movements
  • The Gender/Identity/Power Pyramid and how LGBTI and gender-nonconforming people are part of the 99%
  • What a hate crime is, what overkill is and how these are used to terrorize minorities
  • How economic oppression is connected to oppressions targeting people based on gender, sex, sexual orientation, race, immigrant status, religion, ability and other identities
  • Peaceful activist responses to hate violence, including Transgender Day OF Remembrance (TDOR) and the IT Gets Better and Stomp On Bullying campaigns
  • How Occupy members and supporters can help build positive change on all these issues
