Join Occupy Sandy, neighbors, community organizers & their Sandy Aid allies as they spend the day doing tradtional volunteer service in and around Midland Beach.
From cleaning up storm debris to doing data entry supporting Sandy stricken areas takes many forms and requires individuals with diverse backgrounds.
Each Saturday help is needed both in the Field (in homes & buildings impacted by Sandy) and at the SI Community Mutual Aid Hub.
If you would like to help with clean up in the field please dress warmly & prepared to get dirty. Tyvek Suits & #P100 Masks are provided when needed but most spaces needing assistance are unheated.
Those wishing to help in the Community Tool Library & Free Store in addition to dressing warmly should wear comfortable shoes.
A light bag lunch, coffee, tea & snacks are provided but those with special needs or nut allergies should make arrangements to bring their own meal.
All Field work (Including Canvassing) & Tool Library support can only be done with those 18 years or older with valid ID.
Young Adults & Well attended Children are welcome on a case by case basis to volunteer in the Free Store area in front of 489 Midland with adult supervision. Making art & sorting donations is fun for all ages.
Please travel light as the public spaces we occupy do not have secure areas to store personal belongings.
No advance RSVP or notification is required but we do suggest emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or tweeting the Hub via @StatenIslandOS & @OccupySandy if you are able to.
It is always nice to know if groups are heading to help especially if you are bringing a large pack of friends or 100+ coworkers.
To shorten the orientation process volunteers can fill out the Occupy Sandy online form here:
We don’t share our info with anyone & will only use your email to follow up after you spend time with the neighbors!
