The National Lawyers Guild-New York City Chapter (NLG-NYC) will present Testify!, a benefit concert at the historic Riverside Church on Thursday, November 1, 2012. Click on www.nlgnyc.org for tickets.A diverse group of performers will rise up in support of the NLG-NYC’s work defending robust political dissent in New York City. Brooklyn legends The Persuasions have been perfecting their a capella songcraft for 50 years. Conscious hip hop icon Umi, alongside Dead Prez, has cultivated a powerful and critically acclaimed political voice in rap music. Folk duo Emma’s Revolution brings notes of truth and hope to social justice events around the world. Joining these acts will be testimony from prominent artists and social justice advocates highlighting the NLG-NYC’s work.Since 1937, the NLG-NYC has been on the front lines of social justice struggles in the courts and on the streets. Guild attorneys have worked for over seven decades to support the legal rights of political dissidents, racial and religious minorities, immigrants, workers, and other oppressed groups far from the center of American power. In the past year, Guild members have represented thousands of activists protesting Stop-and-Frisk tactics, police aggression, corporate greed, foreclosure auctions, and the concentration of wealth by Wall Street for the 1%. They have acted as legal observers at hundreds of protests and demonstrations, given Know-Your Rights trainings to targeted groups in Muslim communities and neighborhoods of color, and counseled activists visited by law enforcement. At the heart of this work is the founding doctrine that human rights are more important than property interests, and a determination to strengthen and support diverse voices for justice. Please mark your calendars now and come out to support the National Lawyers Guild-NYC.
