Sorry that the originally announced video-conference with Congress of South African Trade Unions was postponed.
But we are excited to have Sidney Horowitz (which we admit is an alias) is a PhD in economics, former economics policy analyst, writer, and editor; former union staff person; retired university professor; peace and justice activist.: His talk will be on Lenin’s now 100 year-old seminial text Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism (the preceding being a link to the free text of it). Establishment economists, sociologists, and political scientists largely ignore this path breaking work. For people interested in alternative analyses of the capital and financial system, this short (and easily read) book should be required reading. Is imperialism a stage of capitalism, or is it a policy? Is imperialism (monopoly capitalism) the period of transition to socialism? Was Lenin’s on target 100 years ago? If so, is he still on target? What kind of updates does his work need?
Whenever we can, we schedule great presentations and discussions lead by guest speakers on topics related (and not so related) to our core financial areas of focus. The book club / guest speaker forum will meet from 2-3 pm on Sundays before the regular Alternative Banking meeting from 3-5 pm, in Room 409 of the International Affairs Building of Columbia University at Amsterdam and 118th.
