Announcement – Conference in Brasil #CPBR5

December 27, 2011 in News

Announcement

Please post to other lists

Tech Ops was the final recipient of a request from a conference in Brazil (http://www.campus-party.com.br/2012/index.html (http://www NULL.campus-party NULL.com NULL.br/2012/index NULL.html)) in February. They are seeking an appropriate person to invite an OWS person to appear on a panel related to the rise of international online protest politics, as manifested by the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street. The specific text includes:

“We would like to invite one of your representatives (we are aware that you are a leaderless movement, but I’m sure you have a spokesman) to talk about the influence of social media in Occupy Wall Street, its role in organizing thousands of people in New York City, the empowerment of social revolution through the web, etc. We are also inviting people from the Arab Spring, in an attempt of organizing a panel on this subject – for the first time in Brazil.”

To this end, Tech Ops is hosting a meeting on Wednesday at 6pm to decide who would be most appropriate. This issue (figuring out who should go) has been discussed over a few meetings (all of them open, publicized on our lists and NYCGA.net, and properly listed on the agenda in advance.)

While not all the details have been worked out, Tech Ops reached consensus that anyone present at this meeting can vote on who should be selected. (With the possible exception of those applying to go.) Those seeking to represent OWS at this conference must attend in person and post a statement describing their qualifications on a wiki page (below.) In addition, those applying will be able to present to the group and advocate for themselves.

But… Who Should Go?

There are many individuals qualified to represent OWS at this event. (And ultimately, the conference organizers have a say.) As the goal is participation on a panel that discusses the online mobilizations that are part of OWS, and comparing them to other online mobilizations in the Arab Spring, many factors might come into play:

  • Length of time active at OWS
  • Participation in online engagement or the development of online tools
  • Past involvement in the subject matter of OWS, online political engagement, social media
  • The characteristics of the applicant – who do we want to represent us?
  • Other things not mentioned here

What we cannot do effectively is:

  • Determine in advance what anyone can or should say on behalf of OWS. Whoever goes speaks on their own behalf.
  • Appoint any individual to represent the NYCGA – the governing body of OWS. Only the NYCGA can do that.
  • Delay the decision. We have been given a deadline by the conference organizers.

Written submissions must be up by Wednesday, Dec. 26, at noon.

Please submit entries here: http://wiki.occupy.net/wiki/Brasil_-_Campus_Party_Speaker (http://wiki NULL.occupy NULL.net/wiki/Brasil_-_Campus_Party_Speaker)

Adding Groups to NYCGA.net

December 7, 2011 in News

In order to have a new group added to nycga.net, please fill out the New Group Creation form. Submissions will be processed within 48 hours.

On November 30, the Technology Operations group posted a notice on NYGCA.net that officially announced a freeze on group creation that had been partially in-place since early November. This resulted in some emergent groups being left without the online tools and exposure of NYCGA.net.

We apologize for any inconvenience this temporary interruption in group registration has caused.

Extension Denied

November 15, 2011 in News

The petition to extend the restraining order has been denied.

“The movants have not demonstrated that they have a First Amendment right to remain in Zuccotti Park, along with their tents, structures, generators, and other installations to the exclusion ofthe owner’s reasonable rights and duties to maintain Zuccotti Park, or to the rights to public access of others who might wish to use the space safely. Neither have the applicants shown a right to a temporary restraining order that would restrict the City’s enforcement of law so as to promote public health and safety.”

Re-Occupation Plans

November 15, 2011 in News

The NYPD raided Liberty Plaza in the middle of the night. Our re-occupation plans are already underway.

This movement can’t be contained in one square block in lower Manhattan. It is bigger than that. You can’t evict an idea whose time had come.

Show your support. Turn out en masse….

Here is the current list of critical events on Tuesday 11/15/11:

    • Restraining Order Against Eviction of Zuccotti!!!
City Hearing Today at 11:30, 71 Thomas St.
Temporary restraining order issued at 6:30 am prohibiting evictions from Liberty Park (unless “lawful arrests for criminal offenses) allowing protestors back in with tents or other property previously utilized, and prohibitng enforcing “rules published after the occupation began.Attorneys associated with the New York City Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild working as the Liberty Park Legal Working Group obtained a temporary restraining order against the City of New York, various City agencies, and Brookfield properties directing that occupiers be allowed back on the premises with their belongings. See link for the order: http://nlgnyc.org/ (http://nlgnyc NULL.org/)
    • SOLIDARITY EVENT INFO: From Movement Building: http://interoccupy.org/action (http://interoccupy NULL.org/action)
    • Government due to appear in court (71 Thomas Street) at 11:30 am today to respond. For actions:
      • hug a lawyer
      • show up at the courthouse at 11:30
      • know that, given this order, protestors have the right to re-enter the park with belongings.  and if the government prevents that before 1130, they will be defying this judge’s order.  people could print this out and go there peacefully and lawfully.
      • keep the lawyers informed of police interactions, reliable information sharing is how they are able to put these kinds of things together; NLG num 212-679-6018
    • GA TONIGHT at 7pm in Zuccotti Square
    • Facilitation Meeting: Discussion of GA Agenda Items at 4pm in 60 Wall St.
    • 12:00 N: SDNY Pickup, 650 W 57st street. According to a flyer distributed early in the raid, people can pickup anything that was not destroyed by the NYPD. To us, that doesn’t seem to leave much, but good luck.
We are the 99% and we’re still here. Please donate (https://www NULL.wepay NULL.com/xo71ir) to help us rebuild.

EMERGENCY CALL TO ACTION:

October 13, 2011 in News

Prevent the forcible closure of Occupy Wall Street!

Tell Bloomberg: Don’t Foreclose the Occupation.
NEED MASS TURN-OUT: 6AM FRIDAY EVICTION DEFENSE

This is an emergency situation. Please take a minute to read this, and please take action and spread the word far and wide.

Occupy Wall Street is gaining momentum, with occupation actions now happening in cities across the world.

But last night Mayor Bloomberg and the NYPD notified Occupy Wall Street participants about plans to “clean the park”—the site of the Wall Street protests—tomorrow starting at 7am. “Cleaning” was used as a pretext to shut down “Bloombergville” a few months back, and to shut down peaceful occupations elsewhere.

Bloomberg says that the park will be open for public usage following the cleaning, but with a notable caveat: Occupy Wall Street participants must follow the “rules”. These rules include, “no tarps or sleeping bags” and “no lying down.”

NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said that they will move in to clear us and we will not be allowed to take sleeping bags, tarps, personal items or gear back into the park.

So, seems likely that this is their attempt to shut down #OWS for good.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION:

1) Call 311 (or 212-NEW-YORK if you’re out of town) and tell Bloomberg to support our right to assemble and to not interfere with #OWS.

2) Come to #OWS on FRIDAY AT 6AM to defend the occupation from eviction.

Occupy Wall Street is committed to keeping the park clean and safe — we even have a Sanitation Working Group whose purpose this is. We are organizing major cleaning operations today and will do so regularly.

If Bloomberg truly cares about sanitation here he should support the installation of portopans and dumpsters. #OWS allies have been working to secure these things to support our efforts.

We know where the real dirt is: on Wall Street. Billionaire Bloomberg is beholden to bankers.

We won’t allow Bloomberg and the NYPD to foreclose our occupation. This is an occupation, not a permitted picnic.

The Container Game

October 12, 2011 in News

We are restructuring Zuccotti Park, and need your help!

A couple of nights ago, a General Assembly proposal was passed to unlock the
funds to be used for the purchase of storage containers. These containers
will be used for the bedding and personal items of occupiers, and are part
of a multi-step restructuring process by the town planning working group in order to improve efficiency, traffic flow, and the general feng shui of Zuccotti park.

We currently have $2,000 unlocked, and need to buy waterproof
containers to cover as much of our population as possible (ever fluctuating,
300-600 people per night). The plan is to have everyone actively maintain their personal space, and pack their bedding away on a daily basis.

Want to help us find them?

Game Criteria:

1. Delivery time/proximity to Zuccotti Park (We can take deliveries, and
also have means to pick them up)

2. Cost effectiveness

3. Quantity (Make sure enough are available for a bulk purchase of 100, 200+)

Mindfulness of the production method in regards to worker’s rights earns bonus points.

The first person or team to find us the best, fastest available deal wins!

Item to beat:
www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-30-Gallon-Storage-Bins-Set-of-6/8282894
Look up the description to get an idea of the size we’re looking for.

These come out to about $9.33 per container. We don’t want to give walmart our money!

Winner receives mad props, as well as a thank you package from the movement.

Email containergame@gmail.com with your best shot!

Start digging and get creative!

Much Love,
Mike E
Zuccotti Town Planing / Coordination

PS It goes without saying that we would appreciate a bulk contribution of bins ; )

Liberty Plaza Anarchist College Seeks Teacher/Facilitators

October 5, 2011 in News

The main goals and values of this college is to teach how important establishing the values of any group is, and that a society or environment of non-dominance and non-hierarchy is the one in which its members thrive. Anarchy literally means without a ruler, so an individual who oppresses any other individual by limiting their autonomy including if it is a member of the establishment’s protection service, (i.e. police) who is not directly involved in oppression, would not be an anarchist since they would be dominating the other without warrant. Unprovoked oppression not for defense of ones own autonomy is not anarchy.

Please refer teachers and materials to OWSEducation@gmail.com. A short intro to the class you’d like to teach will help pair you with other facilitators. Continue reading (http://nycga NULL.cc/2011/10/05/liberty-plaza-anarchist-college-seeks-teacherfacilitators/#more-999)

Needs of the Occupiers

October 4, 2011 in News

As the Occupation moves into autumn we need to prepare for the onset of of chilly weather.

Most Needed:

Sleeping bags, blankets, tarps and large, clear plastic storage bins to keep it all dry.

Polar fleece sweaters, pants, socks and gloves are also appreciated as, they are durable, easy to clean, keep even the soggiest occupiers warm, and everybody has some buried in a box somewhere. Continue reading (http://nycga NULL.cc/2011/10/04/needsoftheoccupiers/#more-971)

Things We Need

October 3, 2011 in News

Hi my name is Rachel. I’m here with comfort. I want to make an announcement about some things that we need. Important things we need are boots for males and females, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and folding chairs. Also, we have lots of bags of laundry from when it’s been raining. Since there is no Laundromat nearby, we are asking for volunteers who would like to take one bag of laundry to their home to get it clean and bring it back. Please, come see us at Comfort to do that. Thank you. Comfort, if you don’t know already, it’s right next to Medical on this side of the park.
