Request for funds for an OWS trip to Fort Meade, MD for the Bradley Manning trial vigil and march, December 16th and 17th, 2011.
A proposal by the Wikileaks Truck Working Group
Bradley Manning is the US Army Soldier accused of passing classified information to Wikileaks regarding the use of torture in Iraq, the official civilian death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan, the mass incarceration of innocent people in Guantanamo, and other evidence of war crimes being perpetrated by the United States. On April 4, 2010, WikiLeaks published a classified video, allegedly leaked by Manning, of a United States Apache helicopter shooting and killing 11 civilians who do not return fire. This irrefutable evidence of war crime that had been previously ignored and covered up by the US military and administration is the reason that the Iraqi government refused to renew judicial immunity to the US, which is finally bringing the troops home and the war to an end. Manning has been in jail since May 2010.
Bradley Manning was held for almost a year in solitary confinement, subjected to severe sleep deprivation and forced to strip naked. The Obama administration has repeatedly denied requests by UN Rapporteur on torture Juan Mendez to investigate Manning’s treatment. If convicted, Manning faces up to 52 years in prison, dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and benefits and unspecified fines. On Friday, December 16th, Bradley Manning will face a judge for pretrial hearings for the first time in the 17 months he has been incarcerated. The Bradley Manning Support Network, strong allies of the Occupy movement, has organized a vigil for December 16th and a march on December 17th in Fort Meade, Maryland, the site of the trial.
The Wikileaks Truck Working Group is organizing a bus trip to Fort Meade for occupiers and OWS supporters in NYC who wish to stand in solidarity with Bradley Manning. This trip is open to anyone who wishes to come, but is limited to the 50 seats available on the charter bus. We will leave NYC on the morning of Friday the 16th, camp at (TBD) the night of the 16th, and return to NYC the evening of the 17th. We are requesting funding from the GA to pay for transportation and food. For those who can afford to pay, we are asking for a $5-$50 donation, which will promptly be recorded and reimbursed to the General Assembly. The following are our expenses:
$2300 chartered bus, tolls, gratuity
$600 meals (2 breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinner)
-$800 donation from The Bradley Manning Support Network
