Proposal for Saturday, 12/17, General Assembly: Occupy Olympia Solidarity Social Forum Request (Danny K.)

Posted by & filed under Assemblies, Past Proposals.

Letter to Occupy Wall Street,

Occupy Olympia would like to invite Occupy Wall Street to participate in an Occupy Solidarity Social Forum. Occupy Olympia has agreed by consensus at General Assembly to host a self-organized gathering of the Occupy Wall Street Movement to network, build unity, share tactics, workshop strategies, discuss diversity and develop action plans. Olympia, the capital city of Washington, is near the Seattle Tacoma airport, a travel hub, has a strong history of organizing and is home of The Evergreen State College offering plenty of space. Occupy Olympia is a natural choice for hosting one of the nationally organized conferences springing forth from this movement because of it’s temperate weather, strong organizing history, overwhelming local support, proximity to a national airport and it’s local college support.

The Alliance For Global Justice is co-sponsoring the Occupy Solidarity Social Forum bringing their national reach and uncompromising ethic and integrity to make this event a success. Together, Occupy Olympia and AFGJ, are two small groups who agree that the movement will gain strength if we help open space for sharing, discussion and development. It is also agreed that the sooner we create space the better for the movement and that a quick first effort will champion strong gains and garner authentic self organization. Together we will create the space for a wide diversity of occupy movement members to bring their knowledge and skills to the table to share in authentic ways with each other for the goal of growing the strength of the movement.

The date of the conference is February 18th and 19th. Travel subsidies will be offered based on availability, need, cost and with support of the local occupy groups. The conference is open to anyone who registers and self-identifies with the occupy movement. Registrants will be encouraged to seek formal support from their general assembly as a voice but not as a representative. There will be a fee for registering with no one turned away for lack of funds. The general design of the forum will be based on the structure of the US Social Forum though scaled back considerably.

This Forum will be the first of many that will grow organically across the country. Occupy Olympia seeks Occupy Wall Street recognition of this national forum in Olympia which is small, beautiful and neutral, nestled between Occupy Portland and Occupy Seattle who will bring organizing strength to our Occupy Solidarity Social Forum planning. Temperate winters in the Northwest make Olympia inviting and it is also less expensive than many cities. Bringing Occupy Wall Street officially to Olympia along with Occupy Oakland, Boston, Chicago, Denver and DC will be a huge celebration for this small city.

Please bring a formal proposal to the OWS General Assembly that acknowledges and endorses an Occupy Solidarity Social Forum hosted by Occupy Olympia.

Solidarity,
Occupy Olympia

This doesn’t seem to be a proposal, although it does ask the reader to “bring a formal proposal to the OWS General Assembly that acknowledges and endorses an Occupy Solidarity Social Forum hosted by Occupy Olympia”.

This sounds more like an announcement.
