“Mic-Checking Across Borders: Voices from Occupy Wall St. to Chiapas, MX”
To the General Assembly of Occupy Wall St.:
Movement for Justice in El Barrio, The Other Campaign New York, sends you warm greetings from East Harlem. We hope this message finds you well and in high spirits.
We write with the following time-sensitive proposal to be placed on the agenda for tomorrow’s General Assembly. The Movement Building Working Groupendorses and is collaborating with us to make this proposal.
The Zapatistas and the Universidad de La Tierra (Univ. of the Earth) have convened the “Second Seminar of Reflection and Analysis—Planet Earth: Anti-systemic Movements” to take place December 30th through January 2nd in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. They have invited Occupy Wall St. to take part in this important event.
One of the key purposes of this multi-day, international gathering is to serve as a point of convergence for deep analysis and reflection on the current conditions and trajectories of anti-systemic movements from around the globe who are fighting back against the most egregious ravages of neoliberal globalization and for a new world.
We believe this is an exciting opportunity for the plurality of people that constitute Occupy Wall St. to share their varying analyses, concerns, and dreams before an international audience, and to build solidarity with other international movements.
We recognize and embrace the fact that Occupy Wall St., much like the Zapatistas, is a diverse, leaderless, non-hierarchical movement that seeks to change the world from the bottom-up.
To that end, and in light of the short time span, we propose that the General Assembly of Occupy Wall St. approve and endorse the following:
– That, with logistical/filming support from Movement for Justice in El Barrio, a videomessage, “Voices from Occupy Wall St. to Chiapas,”consisting of brief 1-3 min. messages from OWS participants, be recorded as an open and inclusive alternative for Occupy Wall St., in its vast diversity, to participate in the Seminar without relying on individual leaders or representatives. Voices of marginalized groups within OWS will, moreover, find greater expression in the video.
– A call for participants, to be written by Movement for Justice in El Barrio, be released and circulated widely across OWS-related channels of communication. This call will include filming times and locations, also to be coordinated by Movement for Justice in El Barrio, and will have a deadline of Sunday, December 18, 2011 to accommodate for editing and post-production.
– Funding in the amount of $1,000 be allocated to an independent video-editor, who is a long-time social justice activist and OWS supporter, to compile, edit, and produce the videomessage.
