Draft Proposal for Saturday 11/5 General Assembly: Movement Building

Posted by & filed under Assemblies, Past Proposals.

We are a part of mobile occupation, a subgroup of Movement Building. We are planning a walking march from Liberty Square to McPherson
Square in Washington D.C. Our aim is to leave Liberty Square on November 9, 2011 and reach D.C. by November 23 to converge with Occupy D.C. to protest retaining the Bush tax cuts for the rich. The super committee is meeting on this day, and will possibly present a decision about the whether to keep the Bush tax cuts or to not. They may simply extend their deadline (as this often occurs), but either way we want to be there to fight for the 99% with Occupy DC!

There will be 2 trillion dollars in revenues if the Bush tax cuts are done away with. On the 23rd the super committee can stop these cuts for the wealthy! Some personal incomes of the Super Committee members fall in the 1% therefore it is easy for them to make decisions that affect the 99% as they themselves are not affected by those decisions.

A major draw for this march would be for other people to get on board and start walking-whether for an hour, a day, or the full two weeks-we feel it’s imperative for OWS to respect the historical significance of walking long distances to support, promote, and encourage economic and human equality.

We will march on average 20 miles a day from 9am to 5pm (banker hours) and hold nightly GA’s at 7pm in each town where we camp. We will be spending our two “days off” at Occupy Philly and Occupy Baltimore. We are also hoping that a few people from these occupations will join us in the march to Occupy DC.

Additionally, we hope to, as much as possible, coordinate with OWS and other occupations on planned actions, specifically on Nov 11 and Nov 17. We can do a lot from the road! It would be awesome if a medic and a drummer could join us! Our preparations we hope for will include a crash course with the medical team so we can be prepared for the unexpected as we will be marching unsponsored.

Lastly, due to the nature of this march it is important that you understand your personal health and physical condition.

After Nov 23 people can stay in DC, return to OWS, or plan another march to further occupied cities. This march is to take OWS on the road and using nothing more than our feet to spread the word along highways and rural communities. Some of us walking have been at OWS since the beginning and others have joined OWS in the last few weeks. We all have gathered a variety of skills and knowledge that we can share with these other occupations if needed.

We are formally inviting all of you to join this march. If you cannot march please help send us off this Wednesday at noon. We will be taking the Staten Island Ferry just south of here. We are also asking for the General Assembly’s endorsement of this march and its affiliation with Occupy Wall Street. We are also seeking $750 dollars for supplies including: food, back up water, re-usable water bottles, rain gear, first aid kit, etc. This amount is flexible as means become available to us and there will be no abuse of funds.
